About The Position

VEIR is seeking an experienced Technical Writer for a six-month contract to own customer- and field-facing documentation for its superconducting power delivery systems. The role has potential to convert to full-time based on business needs. The writer will create major safety-critical documents—including installation manuals, operation and maintenance manuals, commissioning procedures, specifications, submittal packages, and training materials—and work with Engineering, Controls, Field Service, Solutions Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Product teams. The work involves turning engineering drawings, diagrams, source material, and subject-matter expertise into clear, accurate documentation for EPC engineers, electrical contractors, data center operators, and field technicians. The writer will also establish documentation templates, style standards, review processes, and scalable practices. The engagement is full-time at 40 hours per week, with compensation equivalent to a $95,000 annual salary. The position is on-site/hybrid. During the first three months, the writer will learn VEIR’s product architecture and deployment practices, audit existing documentation, establish the documentation toolchain and workflows, and deliver outlines and first drafts of the lead product’s Installation and O&M Manuals. By six months, the writer is expected to release those manuals and a Guide Specification, complete supporting documents, deliver reusable submittal materials, and document a sustainable process for the team.

  • A portfolio of authored large, complex documents, such as installation manuals, O&M manuals, commissioning or test procedures, and technical specifications.
  • Ability to read and work from engineering source material, including mechanical and electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, P&IDs, schematics, and BOMs.
  • Working knowledge of electrical power equipment and safety practices, including experience writing safety-critical procedures with clear hazard messaging.
  • Strong command of structured, task-based writing, plain technical English, and document design, including headings, tables, callouts, and illustrations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with engineers and field technicians, ask clarifying questions, and conduct efficient SME interviews.
  • Project management capability and ability to drive multiple concurrent documents to release under deadline.
  • Collaborative approach and experience working with cross-functional technical teams and incorporating feedback constructively.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience documenting switchgear, transformers, cables, power distribution, or utility/grid equipment.
  • Experience with cryogenic, thermal, or fluid process systems, such as liquid nitrogen, refrigeration, or cooling loops.
  • Familiarity with industrial control systems, including PLC/HMI, alarm lists, interlocks, and ISA-106/ISA-18.2 concepts.
  • Experience writing for data center, EPC, or utility customers, including submittal packages and guide specifications.
  • Knowledge of documentation standards and compliance requirements, including IEC/IEEE 82079-1, ANSI Z535, and UL/CE/CSA documentation.
  • Experience developing training materials or eLearning for field and operations teams.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end authoring of field-related product documents, including Installation Manuals and Operation & Maintenance Manuals, from outline through released version in coordination with product development stage gates.
  • Write and maintain Functional Specifications, Control Philosophy and Sequence of Operation documents, Guide Specifications, Preventive Maintenance schedules, Commissioning Test Plans, and Manufacturing Assembly Instructions.
  • Assemble data center submittal packages and contribute technical content to datasheets, user guides, application notes, white papers, and training materials.
  • Interview subject-matter experts and use engineering source material—including CAD and general arrangement drawings, P&IDs, process flow diagrams, electrical single-line diagrams, control-panel schematics, BOMs, and FMEAs—to produce accurate procedures.
  • Write clear, task-based procedures for installers, operators, and field technicians working with high-voltage power equipment, liquid-nitrogen cryogenic cooling systems, and industrial control panels; apply consistent hazard and safety messaging.
  • Partner with Engineering and Product Marketing to source and specify illustrations, renderings, diagrams, and labeling, ensuring visuals and text are technically accurate and consistent.
  • Run structured review and approval cycles with Engineering, Field Service, Quality, and Product; manage document version control, revision history, and change requests as designs evolve.
  • Create and refine documentation templates, a style guide, and standards that support scalable documentation across product families, sites, and customers.
  • Manage multiple large documents, prioritize work against product and customer deployment milestones, and meet deadlines.
  • Learn VEIR’s product architecture, superconducting cable and cryogenic cooling systems, controls, and customer-site installation, commissioning, and maintenance practices.
  • Audit existing documentation against the product readiness standard and create a prioritized documentation plan with owners, reviewers, and due dates.
  • Establish the documentation toolchain, templates, style guide, and SME review workflow with Engineering, Solutions, Product, and Field Service.
  • Deliver approved outlines and first drafts of the lead product’s Installation Manual and O&M Manual within the first three months.
  • Release the lead product’s Installation Manual, O&M Manual, and Guide Specification for customer deployment within six months.
  • Complete supporting documents, including Functional Specifications, Control Philosophy / Sequence of Operation, Preventive Maintenance Manual, Spare Parts List, and Commissioning Plan.
  • Deliver a reusable submittal package and documentation set adaptable for new sites and product variants.
  • Document a sustainable documentation process, including templates, review gates, version control, and ownership.
