About The Position

The Team Captain – Sport & Outdoor inspires and coaches teammates to deliver exceptional athlete experiences through expert product knowledge and strong selling leadership. The role drives sales performance and helps athletes find the right gear for their sport. It also contributes to department planning, scheduling, merchandising, staffing, and operational execution while supporting a welcoming and respectful store environment.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
1-3 years of experience.
Previous retail or customer-facing experience required.

Nice To Haves

Previous people leadership experience preferred.

Responsibilities

Anticipate athlete needs and provide clear, accurate, knowledgeable information about products and assortment.
Uphold merchandising and presentation standards, including floor sets, signage, price changes, inventory presentation, and replenishment.
Promote and lead company programs such as customer loyalty participation, warranty sales, and private label credit card enrollment.
Work with the Store Manager and Assistant Store Manager to develop 30-60-90 day plans for assigned departments and business priorities.
Help establish operational plans for staffing, hiring needs, merchandising, and operational initiatives in line with budgets and financial goals.
Execute plans, assess their effectiveness, and make adjustments using independent judgment and analysis.
When the sole leader in the building, act as Head Coach and oversee store operations, including opening and closing procedures, Front End and Cash Office functions, and teammate supervision.
Communicate departmental goals and plans to direct reports, assign workloads based on skill levels, monitor progress, and adjust plans to support operations and athlete needs.
Develop and adjust schedules for direct reports to meet athlete traffic demands and complete operational and merchandising initiatives while meeting payroll and financial goals.
Lead sourcing, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, training, coaching, feedback, development, recognition, motivation, and retention of direct reports.
Manage teammate performance, including annual reviews, promotional recommendations, and accountability for compliance with policies and procedures, including termination recommendations.
Create a store environment where teammates and athletes are welcomed and treated with respect.
Follow and enforce safety, loss prevention, standard operating procedures, and applicable external laws and guidelines.
