About The Position

Brock University is seeking a Teaching Assistant for PSYC 1F90, Foundations of Psychology (Senior Tutor) for the Fall/Winter term. This position is part of the CUPE4207-1 employee group. The nominal workload is 360 hours per full credit course appointment, with one TA for every twelve PSYC 1F90 seminars. The role involves attending lectures, taking notes, attending training meetings, demonstrating understanding of course assignments, providing student contact through office hours and tutorials, proctoring exams, marking exams and assignments, and performing miscellaneous duties as assigned. Senior Tutors are responsible for holding office hours and checking email weekly, with specific requirements for Thursday appointments including an evening office hour. The exact number of hours per week will vary based on course needs.

Requirements

  • Worked as a teaching assistant for PSYC 1F90 at Brock University
  • Ability to demonstrate excellence in leading seminars
  • Ability to demonstrate mastery of course content
  • Ability to demonstrate a firm knowledge of and compliance with all course policies and procedures
  • Experience with deploying effective strategies for teaching, lesson planning, and providing feedback to students
  • Good organizational skills and demonstrated ability to keep accurate records/manage data
  • Adequate availability to mark a large number of exams in a limited amount of time in the week following the December and April exams
  • Adequate availability to lead up to 7 in-person office hours/group tutorials per week during their assigned timeslot
  • Adequate availability to mark project components with a quick turnaround time
  • Ability to attend all course planning meetings, seminars, and lectures as assigned
  • Ability to take legible and complete lecture notes and to explain lecture concepts to students
  • Provide documentation to support the request for consideration of equivalency for courses taken elsewhere (transcript, course outline, grade summary)

Responsibilities

  • Attend lectures and take notes
  • Attend training meetings as required by the instructor(s)
  • Demonstrate a complete understanding of all course assignments
  • Provide student contact (in-person office hours, in-person large group tutorials, email)
  • Proctor the December and April exams and attend the grade collation meeting
  • Mark a large number of exams with a quick turnaround time
  • Mark other written assignments as assigned
  • Miscellaneous duties as assigned
  • Hold office hours and check email on one weekday per week
  • Offer an office hour following the evening lecture on Thursdays, from 7-8 pm
  • Offer up to 7 in-person office hours per week on their assigned day
