About The Position

Kokua Education is hiring part-time substitute teachers for K-12 schools in Brownsville and the surrounding Rio Grande Valley area for the 2026–27 school year. Substitute teachers cover classroom assignments, serve as positive role models, and help students engage with learning. Teachers can choose assignments and set their own schedule, working up to five days per week. Assignments may also involve lunch or recess supervision, hallway monitoring, tutoring, and test proctoring. The role offers up to $145 per day, with pay dependent on education level, and payment is made weekly via W-2. Kokua says candidates may receive an offer within one week of applying, offers support daily from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., and provides a path to potential permanent roles at high-performing K-12 schools. Costs for required state and federal background checks are reimbursed after 10 assignments.

Requirements

At least one year of experience working with children in any setting, such as a classroom, tutoring, or coaching.
At least 48 college credit hours completed.
Confidence managing a classroom of students.
Willingness to step in where needed.
Pass state and federal background checks; costs are reimbursed after 10 assignments.
