About The Position

Kokua Education is hiring substitute teachers in Washington, D.C., for the 2026–27 school year. Substitute teachers support K–12 schools by covering classroom assignments and serving as positive role models who encourage students’ love of learning. The role offers a self-managed schedule, with the opportunity to work up to five days per week and choose from assignments across the D.C. area. Daily positions pay $170, while long-term positions pay $190 per day; pay is issued weekly through W-2 employment. Candidates may also be asked to help with lunch or recess supervision, hallway monitoring, tutoring, and test proctoring. Kokua offers support from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily and free professional development. Applications are being accepted for the 2026–27 school year, and interviews can begin immediately.

Requirements

At least one year of experience working with children in any setting, such as a classroom, tutoring, or coaching.
An associate degree or at least 60 credit hours.
Confidence managing a classroom of students.
Willingness to step in where needed, including for supervision, tutoring, and test proctoring.
Pass state and federal background checks; costs are reimbursed after 10 assignments.
Belief that every child has a unique and powerful gift to share with the world.

Nice To Haves

Willingness to accept morning-of assignments is preferred.
Relevant experience working with students included on the resume is recommended.

Responsibilities

Cover teaching assignments at K–12 schools across the Washington, D.C., area.
Support classroom learning and serve as a positive role model for students.
Manage a classroom of students.
Be willing to assist with lunch and recess supervision, hallway monitoring, tutoring, and proctoring during testing season.
