About The Position

Kokua Education is hiring substitute teachers for K-12 schools across the Chicago area for the 2026–27 school year. Substitute teachers cover classroom assignments and serve as positive role models who help students engage with learning. Teachers can choose their schedule and assignments, work up to five days per week, and may support permanent-role pathways at high-performing schools. The role may also include lunch and recess supervision, hallway monitoring, tutoring, and test proctoring. Kokua provides daily support from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and assistance with obtaining a substitute teaching license.

Requirements

• At least 6 months of experience working with students in any setting, such as a classroom, tutoring, or coaching.
• An associate degree or at least 60 credit hours.
• An Illinois Substitute Teaching License or Paraprofessional license; candidates without a license may receive guidance with the online application process.
• Confidence managing a classroom of students.
• Willingness to commute to Chicago or current residence in the area.
• Pass state and federal background checks.
• Candidates currently on the CPS do-not-hire list cannot be hired.

Responsibilities

• Substitute in K-12 classroom teaching assignments.
• Manage a classroom of students.
• Step in where needed, including lunch and recess supervision, hallway monitoring, tutoring, and proctoring during testing season.
• Serve as a positive role model and help students develop a love of learning.
