About The Position

The Certified Sterile Processing Tech promotes quality and patient safety in the operating room by supporting the efficient flow of the Sterile Processing department. The role performs routine decontamination, processing, sterilization, and distribution of instruments and supplies, and operates and monitors sterilization equipment. It also requires maintaining meticulous records in compliance with AAMI, AORN, Joint Commission, and OSHA standards; maintaining certification; monitoring, instructing, and mentoring non-certified staff; and helping prepare the department for surveys and regulatory assessments. The technician cleans, decontaminates, inspects, assembles, and wraps or packages supplies and instruments using proper procedures. This includes packaging items to support successful sterilization, following recommended practices for cleaning and caring for surgical instruments and powered equipment, and following manufacturers’ validated written instructions for use. The technician understands that single-use devices should not be reprocessed unless FDA guidelines for reprocessing them can be met. Supplies and instruments are sterilized using prescribed methods, such as steam or gas plasma (Sterrad), and washer/decontaminators are operated according to department policy and procedure.
