About The Position

GE Aerospace is seeking an experienced Staff Engineer – FPGA Design/Verification to lead the development of custom logic for advanced avionics hardware. This role supports the full FPGA design lifecycle—from requirements and architecture through design, verification, documentation, and certification. The successful candidate will bring strong FPGA design expertise, technical leadership, and the ability to manage multiple complex engineering efforts in a regulated aerospace environment. This individual will work across engineering teams to deliver reliable, certifiable custom-logic solutions for aviation applications. The Staff Engineer – FPGA Design/Verification will design, verify, and support FPGA, ASIC, and CPLD solutions used in avionics hardware. The role includes VHDL design and simulation, requirements development and traceability in DOORS, creation of DO-254 certification artifacts, and technical documentation throughout the product-development lifecycle. This is a senior technical role requiring the ability to define complex architectures, develop project plans, manage schedule and cost objectives, support proposals, and lead work across multiple programs simultaneously. The engineer will use sound technical judgment to resolve challenging hardware and verification issues while mentoring less-experienced engineers and collaborating with cross-functional teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline from an accredited university or college.
  • Minimum of 8 years of professional design experience.
  • Experience designing, developing, simulating, or verifying FPGA, ASIC, and/or CPLD hardware.
  • Experience with VHDL-based FPGA design and simulation.
  • Ability to develop technical plans, manage multiple priorities, and deliver work within program schedule and cost objectives.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen due to program and export-control requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineer, Computer Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • At least 5 years of experience developing computing products containing complex System-on-Chip (SoC) architectures.
  • Experience with Xilinx Zynq and/or Microchip PolarFire devices in System-on-Chip or System-on-Module applications.
  • Knowledge of high-speed data interfaces and computing functions, including PCIe, AXI, SERDES, DMA, and related architectures.
  • Experience with avionics interfaces and protocols, including MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 429, ARINC 664, and Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN).
  • Experience with FPGA development environments such as Xilinx Vivado, Microchip Libero, Intel Quartus, and Lattice Diamond.
  • Experience with VHDL and UVM test benches.
  • Familiarity with Mentor Graphics tools, including Expedition Enterprise and HyperLynx PI/SI.
  • Experience in military, aerospace, or avionics product development.
  • Experience with DO-254 and civil FAA certification processes.
  • Strong technical leadership, influence, facilitation, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Ability to break down complex technical problems, apply critical thinking, and drive practical solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering activities across the full FPGA design lifecycle, including requirements, architecture, design, simulation, verification, integration, and release.
  • Design FPGA, ASIC, and CPLD solutions for aerospace and avionics hardware applications using Xilinx, Microsemi, Intel, Lattice, or comparable device families.
  • Develop and maintain VHDL designs, simulation environments, and verification test benches.
  • Develop, manage, and trace requirements in DOORS.
  • Create and maintain technical data and certification artifacts in support of DO-254 and applicable civil or military aerospace requirements.
  • Define FPGA/custom-logic architectures for complex product applications.
  • Develop and execute custom-logic project plans, including technical scope, schedule, cost, risks, and resource requirements.
  • Support bids, proposals, technical assessments, and product-development planning.
  • Analyze technical data, conduct trade studies, and make design recommendations to support program decisions.
  • Support hardware manufacturing, integration, troubleshooting, and technology-development activities as needed.
  • Lead or support multiple projects and engineering teams in parallel.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers with less experience.
  • Communicate complex technical information clearly and build alignment across engineering, program, quality, and customer stakeholders.
  • Ensure technical documentation is complete, accurate, and compliant with engineering policies and procedures.
