About The Position

The Sr. Platform Software Engineer will develop and maintain Apple’s relational database platform, which hosts PostgreSQL databases supporting workloads across Services, Manufacturing, AIML, and other areas. The role focuses on building secure, API-driven services that automate the full lifecycle of database clusters at scale, including provisioning, scaling, patching, failover, and decommissioning. The platform is used by highly visible Apple services, and the work contributes directly to reliability for users worldwide.

The team builds highly reliable microservices and provides deep observability, durability, and automation for customers. The position also involves maintaining and enhancing monitoring and alerting. Success requires an understanding of reliability concepts—including observability, monitoring, alerting, fault tolerance, and auto-remediation—and an interest in expanding what can be automated. The role is part of AI & Data Platforms (AiDP), which brings together data, application development, machine learning, data services, and customer success to support AI-powered innovation and adoption of generative AI across Apple IS&T.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of software development experience.
• Experience building highly available software services or platform infrastructure.
• Experience designing, building, and maintaining API-driven microservices.
• Proficiency in Python, or optionally Java, Kotlin, or C/C++.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, or equivalent work experience.

Nice To Haves

• Experience building and interacting with cloud APIs such as AWS or GCP.
• Experience working with relational databases.
• Good understanding of PostgreSQL internals.
• Experience supporting PaaS or DBaaS at scale.
• Familiarity with observability platforms such as Prometheus/Grafana, Splunk, or equivalent.
• Experience with AI/ML tooling, including LLM APIs, RAG pipelines, AI agent frameworks, or integrating ML inference into production services.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain the platform hosting Apple’s PostgreSQL databases.
• Design, build, and maintain API-driven microservices that manage database cluster lifecycles.
• Automate database provisioning, scaling, patching, failover, and decommissioning.
• Provide observability, durability, and automation for platform customers.
• Maintain and enhance monitoring and alerting.
• Support reliability through fault tolerance and auto-remediation.
