About The Position

Apple is seeking a Senior Platform Software Engineer to build and maintain the automation platform for Apple’s relational database service. The team develops secure, API-driven microservices that manage the full lifecycle of PostgreSQL database clusters, including provisioning, scaling, patching, failover, and decommissioning. These services support important workloads across Apple Services, Manufacturing, AI/ML, and other areas, with a focus on reliability, durability, observability, and automation. The role involves product engineering for a platform used by highly visible Apple services. You will develop tools to streamline database management and performance tuning, and integrate AI/ML capabilities such as intelligent configuration recommendations, workload-aware scheduling, and LLM-powered interfaces for operator workflows. You will also help maintain monitoring and alerting, develop self-healing mechanisms, and integrate database automation into CI/CD pipelines.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of software development experience.
  • Experience building highly available software services or platform infrastructure.
  • Experience designing, building, and maintaining API-driven microservices.
  • Proficiency in Python, or optionally Java, Kotlin, or C/C++.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience building and interacting with cloud APIs, such as AWS or GCP.
  • Experience working with relational databases.
  • Good understanding of PostgreSQL internals.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting PaaS or DBaaS at scale.
  • Familiarity with observability platforms such as Prometheus/Grafana, Splunk, or equivalent.
  • Experience with AI/ML tooling, such as LLM APIs, RAG pipelines, AI agent frameworks, or integrating ML inference into production services.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build tools to automate database management tasks and performance tuning.
  • Integrate AI/ML capabilities into database platform workflows, including configuration recommendations, workload-aware scheduling, and LLM-powered operator interfaces.
  • Design, build, and maintain secure, versioned microservices that expose database lifecycle operations through APIs.
  • Ensure services handle concurrent execution correctly, manage partial failures gracefully, and evolve APIs without breaking existing consumers.
  • Integrate database management automation into CI/CD pipelines, including automated testing, canary rollouts, and rollback capabilities.
  • Develop and enhance monitoring, alerting, and health-check systems that provide visibility into database health.
  • Build self-healing mechanisms that detect and automatically remediate known failure patterns.
  • Manage PostgreSQL database lifecycle operations, including provisioning, scaling, patching, failover, and decommissioning.
