About The Position

The Specimen Technician will perform general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department, including A-station and presort. This role involves handling the pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory, performing imaging, microfilming, centrifugation, and aliquoting of specimens. The technician must ensure all functions are performed with confidence, accuracy, and in a timely manner, while practicing good safety habits in a biohazard environment. Maintaining a neat and clean work area, adhering to core values, safety, and compliance policies, and communicating effectively with all levels of staff are also key aspects of this position.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic understanding of computers.
  • Ability to enter 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.
  • Ability to learn and understand specimen types related to ordered tests.
  • Ability to learn and understand compliance regulations related to test ordering.
  • Availability to work weekends, holidays, on call, and overtime as required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to foster a positive environment.
  • Ability to adapt to change and demonstrate flexibility.
  • Ability to sit for long periods.
  • Ability to stand for long periods.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of laboratory testing and/or laboratory specimen processing.
  • Medical background including medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory.
  • Previous hospital laboratory experience.
  • Previous experience in a production environment.
