About The Position

OpenMined is hiring a Senior Technical Program Manager to own delivery planning and execution across its flagship initiatives, including ScreamingFace and AI Oversight. Reporting to the Chief Product Officer, this person will coordinate timelines, dependencies, and delivery across product, engineering, research, and partnerships teams. The role involves translating goals into dated milestones, maintaining a current roadmap, keeping project tools accurate, and alerting leadership early to delivery risks and trade-offs. This is a technical program management role supporting work in distributed systems, LLM infrastructure, and privacy-enhancing technologies. The successful candidate will establish and continually improve project management practices suited to an AI-native team, including using AI agents and automations to streamline planning, reporting, risk detection, and tracker maintenance. They will also build project management capability across the organization through standards, templates, coaching, and shared practices. The position is fully remote for people based in the United States who can work within one hour of US Eastern Time. OpenMined is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation developing open-source technology for privacy-preserving data access and AI. The stated salary range is $123,000–$218,000 per year, with actual offers based on skills, experience, and location.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of technical project or program management experience delivering complex software with product and engineering teams; transferable experience such as a software engineering background may also be considered.
  • Experience building or rebuilding a project management practice, including planning cadences, tooling, and standards that teams continued to use, while earning buy-in through credibility rather than heavy process.
  • Experience shaping project management for AI-native teams, including working with engineers who use AI coding agents and adapting processes as those workflows evolve.
  • Daily use of AI in project management work, including building or configuring AI agents, automations, or workflows for status reporting, risk detection, planning, or tracker hygiene, with concrete results.
  • Experience delivering amid continuous shipping and technical uncertainty, such as in R&D, ML/AI, infrastructure, or developer platforms with frequent releases and changing plans.
  • A computer science or other technical degree, or at least 3 years of software engineering experience.
  • Ability to read code, pull requests, and architecture documentation.
  • Deep, hands-on experience with engineering trackers such as Linear, Jira, and GitHub, including designing team workflows rather than only using the tools.
  • Clear, concise written and spoken communication, including the ability to explain status, risk, and trade-offs to engineers, executives, and funders.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working on a fully remote, distributed team.
  • Experience mentoring or managing project or program managers, or helping hire them.
  • Experience with LLMs, AI evaluation, AI safety, or privacy-enhancing technologies.
  • Experience at an early-stage startup or research lab building delivery processes from scratch.
  • Experience managing grant-funded or partner-funded deliverables, including reporting milestones to funders.
  • Experience coordinating external partner pilots or integrations, such as with AI labs, research institutions, or government.
  • Open-source project experience as a contributor or project or release manager.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end delivery of OpenMined's flagship initiatives, including quarterly goals, milestones, dependencies, and release dates.
  • Design, run, and improve project management practices for an AI-native team, including planning, tracking, status reporting, and retrospectives.
  • Use and build AI agents and automations to draft status updates, summarize Linear, GitHub, and meeting activity, flag risks and stale work, and keep plans current.
  • Set project management standards and templates, coach product and engineering leads, and develop project management skills across the team.
  • Translate quarterly OKRs into dated, sequenced plans with product and engineering leads and update plans as research results and priorities change.
  • Maintain a living product roadmap on a regular review cadence and make it usable for grant proposals and funder reports.
  • Own cross-team dependencies spanning multiple boards, teams, and external partners, and proactively resolve blockers.
  • Own project management tooling, including Linear for engineering and Asana for cross-functional work; establish conventions and ensure tool status reflects reality.
  • Ensure work in GitHub links to Linear issues across active repositories and make PR review, release status, and repository ownership visible.
  • Track and report milestone progress, cycle time, and OKR key results to leadership; flag slipping dates early and provide clear trade-off options.
  • Coordinate external deliverables, including partner pilots, program launches such as the research fellowship, and grant milestones.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance with company contributions.
  • 403(b) retirement plan, described as the 401(k) equivalent for nonprofits.
  • Flexible work hours.
