Senior Software Engineer 1- Business Logic

The Farmer's DogNew York, NY
$190,000 - $200,000Onsite

About The Position

The Farmer's Dog believes the best customer experience comes from owning the technology that powers it. They design, build, and operate their systems in-house, from subscription and e-commerce to fulfillment and delivery. Engineers work on problems that matter and are hard, such as evolving systems to support rapid growth, building flexible platforms, and creating new product experiences. The company values short feedback loops, peer-reviewed code to production in minutes via CI/CD, and A/B experiments, feature flags, shadow deployments, and progressive rollouts for confident releases. As a Senior Software Engineer on the Business Logic pod, you will work on the core systems of The Farmer's Dog: subscriptions, pricing, billing, and order generation. These systems are being reshaped for the next phase of growth. You will own architectural decisions, partner with other engineering pods, Product, Design, Data Analytics, and Lifecycle Comms. The team cares deeply about building reliable, scalable systems and working well together, regularly whiteboarding, pair programming, and reviewing architecture with peers. This role offers an opportunity to make an outsized impact on technology, customers, and the lives of dogs.

Requirements

  • Strong full stack engineer with 6 - 8+ years of experience, comfortable working across the frontend and backend, and enjoy building features end-to-end.
  • Significant experience building and operating production systems where bugs cost money or break customer trust.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with value in writing down key decisions, tradeoffs, and practices.
  • Ability to welcome diverse opinions and actively seek input to challenge assumptions.
  • Ownership mentality, excellent problem-solving skills, ability to prioritize tasks effectively, with strong attention to detail.
  • Pragmatic judgment about when to reach for AI and other new tools and when not to.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and ambiguous environment, naturally curious and proactive self-starter.
  • Love dogs.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in our stack (TypeScript end-to-end, GraphQL, Temporal for durable workflows, Postgres, AWS) is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the end-to-end lifecycle of complex systems and features, from design through long-term operation.
  • Decompose ambiguous problems into concrete work, breaking them into shippable scope, making defensible judgment calls, and shipping code that delivers against them.
  • Understand data relationships and how they propagate through the system, owning the data model end-to-end from API to database, designing schemas, migrations, and contracts.
  • Own production operation and monitoring of the systems you build, with awareness of their SLAs, diagnosing root causes, and anticipating risk before it becomes an incident.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Product, Design, Data Analytics, Lifecycle Comms, and others, bringing them in from the start to solve problems together.
  • Develop the pod and improve the system by mentoring other Engineers through code review, design feedback, and incident retros.
  • Refine the processes, tools, and on-call practices that raise the bar for everyone.
  • Work in the stack: TypeScript end-to-end, GraphQL, Temporal for durable workflows, Postgres, AWS, and embrace and evaluate new tools as the work requires.
  • Leverage AI tools to make your work better, owning what you ship and being able to explain, debug, and maintain it.
