About The Position

Intertek is seeking a Senior Project Engineer to join their Electrical team in Cortland, New York. This role involves performing testing and evaluation on various products according to U.S., Canadian, and international product safety standards, writing reports, and communicating with clients. The position also requires providing local expertise in specific product categories and mentoring junior technical staff. The role has a potential for 50% travel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in electrical engineering with focus on electrical circuits and renewable energy
  • 4+ years of experience in directly related field
  • Microsoft Office software experience is a must have
  • Must be aware of, and adhere to, safety practices and policies to ensure your own safety, as well as the safety of others who may be affected by your actions at work
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment with excellent organization and time-management skills
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively in verbal written and presentation formats
  • Must have a valid unrestricted driver's license and reliable driving record
  • Excellent interpersonal and demonstrated communication skills, both verbally and written
  • Must be customer focused and quality driven
  • Ability to travel as business needs dictate, up to 50%

Nice To Haves

  • Prior project management experience
  • Prior direct experience in renewable energy field and knowledge on intricacies of the US, Canadian, and other international product safety standards (ANSI, CSA, UL, EN, IEC) such as UL 9540, UL 9540A, UL 3141, UL 1973, UL2200, UL 67, UL 891 etc.
  • Experience with inverter standards such as UL 1741, IEEE 1547, IEC 62109, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Independently perform testing and evaluation on a variety of products to the provisions of U.S., Canadian and other International product safety standards.
  • Write reports and communicate with clients.
  • Provide local expertise in one or more product categories.
  • Mentor and train less senior technical personnel.
  • Read and determine applicability of national codes and standards clauses for the EUT (equipment under test).
  • Read and understand electrical and mechanical schematics and manufacturing instructions.
  • Read and understand client-provided or otherwise published performance or product safety standards.
  • Validate the project scope and sample applicability.
  • Identify and locate test instruments and equipment required for testing.
  • Set up and operate EUT; perform and document simple repairs on EUT as needed.
  • Perform certification, testing work including but not limited to Batteries, BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems), Combiner Boxes, On Grid & Off-Grid Inverters, DC-DC Convertors, PV Modules.
  • Conduct construction review, create evaluation reports and test plans, conduct and/or witness testing, resolve technical and/or administrative issues to power electronics standards.
  • Set up and operate standard test equipment including but not limited to: Temperature/Humidity Chambers; Programmable Power Supplies; PLC or other controllers; pneumatic, hydraulic, or electric actuators; AC/DC power supplies and loads; oscilloscope; multi-meter; dielectric strength tester; ground continuity tester; digital multi-meter; surge generator; over-voltage tester; environmental condition chamber; and articulated probes.
  • Use hand tools to build/calibrate test fixtures.
  • Perform testing of products in accordance with standards. Core tests may include but are not limited to: Battery Cycling (Charge/Discharge), Temperature/Humidity soak or cycle, durability cycling, Voltage and Current measurement, dielectric, pressure, abnormal and fault condition simulation, rain, dust, corrosion.
  • Compile test results during construction review and testing.
  • Compile data and product description and type final report using established report shell.
  • Submit report to reviewer for final approval.
  • Communicate project status and test results to client, sales personnel, and management throughout testing.
  • Provide on-going support to clients as needed.
  • Train and mentor less senior technical staff.
  • Supply information for quotes such as length of project, site needed, rental equipment, samples, and standards that will be used.
  • Follow sample handling procedures, ensuring that sample is logged in and out of the system.
  • Move equipment, as needed through the facility.
  • Properly package sample for shipment.
  • Provide sales support such as attending client visits.
  • Perform additional duties as required.
