About The Position

The Senior Product Safety Engineer, Renewable Energy is an experienced, plug-and-play impact player who provides engineering expertise to evaluate conformance of inverters, battery energy storage systems, EV equipment and other power generation equipment to industry standards, creates evaluation reports and test plans, and conducts and/or witnesses testing with minimal ramp-up, including extensive on-site work at customer facilities. This role also supports cross training of Product Safety Engineers, Renewable Energy on core testing disciplines, and cross trains on core product safety testing as needed to support the broader program during ramp up. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering with 5 or more years of experience, or a master's degree in electrical engineering with 4 or more years of experience.
  • 5 or more years of hands-on experience with utility interactive inverters, battery energy storage systems, EV switchgear and/or power conversion equipment required.
  • Demonstrated experience with U.S., Canadian and other international product safety standards, such as ANSI, CSA, UL, EN, IEC and IEEE.
  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted driver's license and a clean driving record.

  • Self motivated and able to work independently in a fast paced, multi tasking environment.
  • Ability to travel to customer sites as business needs dictate, up to 50%, including for data acceptance program audits.

Responsibilities

  • Independently conduct evaluations of equipment to determine compliance with applicable standards.
  • Plan, coordinate and execute project work and keep the client informed.
  • Read and understand schematics and manufacturing instructions.
  • Validate project scope and sample applicability.
  • Identify and locate test instruments and equipment required for testing within the scope of the project.
  • Set up and operate the equipment under test (EUT).
  • Conduct thorough construction review and document results.
  • Develop and set up test plans; follow established test plans.
  • Perform testing of products in accordance with standards. Core tests include, but are not limited to, rating, leakage current, dielectric, temperature, pressure, stability and rain testing.
  • Perform utility interactive testing such as response to abnormal voltage, response to abnormal frequency, unintentional islanding, harmonic distortion and interconnection integrity.
  • Supply information for quotes, such as project length, site needs, rental equipment, samples and standards to be used.
  • Provide sales support, such as quoting and attending client visits.
  • Complete preliminary design reviews (PDR), both on and off site.
  • Conduct testing on site at customer manufacturing locations as required by the project.
  • Support the data acceptance program, including periodic on-site audits of customer test data, procedures and facilities.
  • Build specialized expertise in renewable energy equipment; work toward becoming a reviewer, resident expert or advanced product knowledge resource.
  • Set up and operate standard test equipment, including but not limited to power analyzers, oscilloscopes, load banks, EMI equipment, thermocouples and data loggers, multimeters, dielectric strength testers, ground continuity testers, surge generators, over voltage testers, environmental condition chambers and articulated probes. Use hand tools to build and calibrate test fixtures.
  • Follow sample handling procedures, ensuring samples are logged in and out of the system. Move equipment as needed through the facility. Properly package samples for shipment.
  • Communicate with clients, sales personnel and management throughout testing.
  • Review project files for compliance with operating procedures.
  • Make technical decisions relating to the interpretation and applicability of standards and the development of test programs.
  • Interact with clients, accreditors and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) to resolve issues; elevate to the next level of management when needed.
  • Support cross training of Product Safety Engineers, Renewable Energy on core product safety testing disciplines, and cross train on renewable energy specifics with the broader team as needed.
