Senior Field Service Technician EV Charging Tier III

Zero Impact Builders•Fremont, CA
•$75,000 - $85,000•Onsite

About The Position

ChargeTronix is hiring a senior Tier III field service technician to serve as the top technical field position on its service team. The technician resolves complex DC fast-charger faults, commissions new sites and confirms they are ready for service, mentors Tier I/II technicians, and owns uptime and reliability across a Southern California-based territory. The role works independently with little supervision, makes on-site safety and repair judgments, serves as a primary customer contact, and reports structured failure data to engineering. It reports to the Field Service Manager and has no direct reports, while acting as a technical lead for Tier I/II technicians in the territory. The position involves extensive regional and occasional out-of-state travel, with 75% or more travel expected and home most weekends. The schedule is generally Monday to Friday during standard hours, plus a paid on-call rotation and occasional weekend or after-hours work when a site is down. Technicians plan their own routes and workdays. Compensation is $75,000 to $85,000 per year depending on experience, credentials, and platform depth; per diem on travel days and an on-call differential are additional. The work includes servicing ChargeTronix hardware in the field, commissioning and testing EV charging sites, conducting maintenance and upgrade campaigns, managing territory spares, documenting repairs, and collaborating with engineering. It requires working outdoors in varied weather and around energized electrical equipment up to 480 VAC and 1,000 VDC using appropriate PPE. The job includes frequent driving and periodic air travel, physical work such as climbing and lifting, and maintaining tools, test equipment, vehicle, and PPE in inspection-ready condition.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of hands-on electrical or electromechanical field service experience, including at least 3 years on EV charging equipment and at least 2 years on DC fast chargers rated 50 kW or above.
  • Demonstrated component-level repair experience on DC fast-charging hardware, including power modules, control or communication boards, contactors, and cooling systems, plus cable and connector replacement for CCS, NACS, and CHAdeMO.
  • Experience with 480 V three-phase systems and high-voltage DC, and ability to read one-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
  • A track record of training or leading other technicians, or writing procedures used by others.
  • One of the following credentials: California General Electrician Certification; a journeyman or master electrician license from another state; EVITP certification; or at least 5 years of documented DCFC field service with component-level repair and California Electrician Trainee registration obtained within 90 days of hire.

  • OSHA 10 certification; OSHA 30 is preferred.
  • Current CPR/First Aid including low-voltage rescue, or ability to complete it within 60 days of hire; training is company-provided.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record, and ability to pass a background check and DOT-style medical clearance for a company vehicle.
  • Working knowledge of NEC, particularly Article 625, NFPA 70E, and OSHA 29 CFR 1910 Subpart S.
  • Proficiency with multimeters, clamp meters, insulation-resistance testers, and torque tools; ability to use an oscilloscope or data logger when needed.
  • Ability to read charger logs and communication traces, including PLC and CAN, and identify where a charging session failed.
  • Networking basics for connected chargers, including Ethernet, cellular modems, Wi-Fi, RS-485, and backend connectivity troubleshooting.
  • Comfort using ticketing and CRM tools such as Salesforce, Zendesk, or similar, Microsoft Office or Google Workspace, and writing clear field reports.
  • Ability to work independently and decisively on site while recognizing when to request help.
  • Customer-first communication style, including remaining calm when stations are down and clearly explaining technical issues.
  • Reliability during heavy travel and ability to plan routes to maximize the number of sites served per trip.
  • Ability to meet the described physical demands, including frequent lifting and moving of 50 lb and occasional heavier items with assistance or equipment.
  • Close and color vision sufficient to read displays, wiring, and indicator lights.

  • Conduct acceptance charge tests across vehicle platforms and CCS1, NACS, and CHAdeMO connector types, and sign off that sites are ready for service.
  • Maintain and update the test-vehicle fleet and conduct interoperability tests as new vehicles and NACS adapters enter the market.
  • Execute field upgrades and retrofit campaigns, including NACS cable and adapter retrofits, firmware rollouts, and engineering change orders.
  • Own territory uptime, mean time to repair, and first-time-fix rate, and report these measures weekly.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance using the ChargeTronix PM checklist and recommend checklist changes.
  • Identify repeat-fault patterns across sites, drive issues to root cause, and write field service bulletins and work instructions.
  • Manage truck stock and territory spares; tag and return failed parts with complete failure data for RMA and warranty.
  • Train and ride along with Tier I/II technicians and sign off their readiness to work independently.
  • Write and maintain SOPs, troubleshooting guides, and training materials for the service team.
  • Serve as the primary on-site contact for customers, site hosts, electrical contractors, utilities, and inspectors, explaining technical issues to non-technical people.
  • Perform job hazard analysis, lockout/tagout, arc-flash risk assessment, and PPE selection on energized jobs; exercise stop-work authority and model safe practices.
  • Perform electrical work in accordance with NEC, including Article 625, local code, and manufacturer specifications.
