Self Checkout Clerk
About The Position
The Self-Checkout Clerk helps keep the store’s front end running smoothly by guiding customers through self-checkout, assisting when needed, and providing friendly customer service. The role combines customer support with register operation to make checkout accurate, efficient, and enjoyable. Training is provided; no education or experience is required. The position also supports other store activities as needed, including courtesy, drive-up and carry-out service, stocking and facing merchandise, maintaining a clean checkout area, and assisting with promotions and special projects. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen.
Requirements
- Follow detailed written or verbal instructions and work through tasks involving a few concrete variables.
- Perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
- Understand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions.
- Communicate supply needs orally or in writing.
- Work effectively as part of a team to deliver a positive customer experience.
- Complete a pre-employment drug screen.
Responsibilities
- Greet customers and provide prompt, friendly service.
- Help customers use self-checkout equipment and ensure orders are processed accurately and efficiently.
- Scan products, process orders, occasionally bag items, and properly handle tenders and coupons.
- Operate the cash register as needed and process payment types including cash, checks, credit cards, coupons, food stamps, WIC checks, rain checks, in-store charges, and lottery transactions.
- Count back change, issue receipts, and provide cash refunds or credit memorandums for returned merchandise as needed.
- Follow applicable local, state, and federal requirements for WIC, food stamps, and sales of tobacco, liquor, and lottery tickets.
- Assist courtesy personnel and support drive-up and carry-out service as needed.
- Stay informed about item lookup and department numbers, product features, weekly ad price changes, and sale items.
- Stock, face, and rotate merchandise; clean shelves; understand shelf tags; and help customers locate items.
- Keep the register and self-checkout area clean, maintain adequate supplies, and report improper cash levels in the cash drawer.
- Verify register balances at the beginning and end of shifts where applicable.
- Communicate clearly by intercom or telephone, answer customer questions, and follow up with appropriate personnel as needed.
- Remain aware of surroundings to support store safety and security.
- Assist store management with displays and decorations for promotions and events as needed.
- Assist in other store areas and take on special projects as assigned.
- Maintain personal hygiene and dress standards and follow Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines.
- Report to work as scheduled and on time.
