Self Checkout Clerk
About The Position
Hy-Vee is seeking a customer-focused Self-Checkout Clerk to help keep the store’s front end running smoothly. The role combines friendly customer service with knowledge of register operations, helping customers use self-checkout and stepping in when assistance is needed. Training is provided, and no education or prior experience is required. The position is based in a fast-paced retail store environment. Clerks spend their shifts on their feet and may encounter temperature extremes, dampness, moving equipment hazards, and cleaning chemicals or solvents. Employment is contingent upon successfully completing a pre-employment drug screen.
Requirements
- Follow detailed written or verbal instructions and work through tasks involving a few concrete variables.
- Perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
- Understand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions.
- Communicate supply needs orally or in writing.
- Work effectively as part of a team to deliver a good customer experience.
- Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift; perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending.
- Complete a pre-employment drug screen successfully.
Responsibilities
- Provide prompt, friendly customer service and make customer interactions positive.
- Assist customers at self-checkout, explain how to use the equipment, and ensure orders are processed accurately and efficiently.
- Scan products, process orders, occasionally bag items, and properly handle tenders and coupons.
- Operate the cash register as needed and process cash, checks, credit cards, coupons, food stamps, WIC checks, rain checks, in-store charges, and lottery transactions.
- Count back change, issue receipts, and provide cash refunds or credit memorandums for returned merchandise as needed.
- Follow applicable local, state, and federal requirements for WIC, food stamps, and sales of tobacco, liquor, and lottery tickets.
- Assist courtesy personnel and support drive-up and carry-out service as needed.
- Stay informed about item look-up numbers, department numbers, item features, weekly ad price changes, and sale items.
- Stock, face, and rotate merchandise; clean shelves; understand shelf tags; and escort customers to items when requested.
- Keep register and self-checkout areas clean, maintain adequate supplies, and report improper cash levels in the cash drawer.
- Verify register balances at the beginning and end of shifts where applicable.
- Communicate on the intercom or telephone, answer customer questions, and follow up with appropriate personnel as needed.
- Remain aware of surroundings to support store safety and security.
- Assist store management with displays and decorations for promotions and events as needed.
- Assist in other store areas and complete special projects as assigned.
- Follow personal hygiene and dress standards, Hy-Vee policies, and store guidelines.
- Report to work as scheduled and on time.
