Robot Operator

AMI•New York, NY

About The Position

AMI is hiring a Robot Operator to support evaluation of AI algorithms and collection and annotation of robot data. The role involves arranging objects and scenes in specified configurations, launching algorithms on robots, monitoring runs, recording outcomes and repeating trials across variations. The operator will also teleoperate robots or run scripted data collection, review and label recorded episodes, and document results for researchers. The role includes starting, calibrating, inspecting, resetting and shutting down robots, cameras and operator stations according to documented procedures. Operators are expected to identify unusual robot behavior or possible hardware and software issues, stop work when safety is in question, report problems clearly, maintain organized and inventoried workspaces, and test new tasks, hardware and tools. This is a full-time, in-office role with a 40-hour workweek.

Requirements

  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to come up with creative solutions.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and ability to follow written instructions exactly.
  • Strong hand–eye coordination, manual dexterity and spatial awareness.
  • Ability to learn new physical control systems quickly.
  • Comfort with repetitive, precision-focused work and ability to maintain consistent quality over a full shift.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, especially when describing what went wrong.
  • Basic computer skills, including running programs from instructions and using spreadsheets, video review and data-entry tools.
  • Comfort with a Linux terminal, basic Python, or running scripts.
  • Sound safety judgment, including willingness to stop a robot when something looks off.
  • Reliability and punctuality for scheduled shifts.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience with robot arms, mobile robots or automation equipment.
  • Basic hardware troubleshooting experience with cables, cameras, networking or power.
  • Background in lab, manufacturing, assembly, fulfillment or quality-control work.
  • Gaming, VR/AR, simulation, motion-capture or other controller-based experience.
  • Data annotation, AI training operations or structured video-review experience.
  • Comfort with a Linux terminal, basic Python, or running scripts.
  • Interest in AI and robotics research.

Responsibilities

  • Arrange objects and scenes in exact, specified configurations so test runs are comparable.
  • Launch algorithms on robots following written instructions and closely monitor each run.
  • Accurately and consistently record outcomes, timings and unusual events.
  • Reset scenes and repeat trials across many variations.
  • Teleoperate robots through tasks including picking, placing, sorting, stacking, opening containers, tool use and simple assembly.
  • Run scripted or programmatic data collection in which robots are driven by code.
  • Introduce requested variations in objects, positions, lighting and task order while keeping technique consistent.
  • Meet daily data-volume targets without compromising quality or safety.
  • Review recorded episodes, classify them as successful, failed or invalid, and assign rewards.
  • Label task phases, outcomes and failure reasons using annotation tools.
  • Write clear operator notes describing what happened in each run.
  • Start up, calibrate, inspect, reset and shut down robots, cameras and operator stations using documented procedures.
  • Identify unusual robot behavior, hardware faults or software issues; stop work when something appears unsafe and report problems clearly enough for an engineer to reproduce them.
  • Keep stations, objects and shared spaces organized and inventoried.
  • Test new tasks, hardware and tools, and suggest improvements to procedures.
