About The Position

Grand Canyon University (GCU) maintains relationships with nonprofit organizations identified by the IRS as 501(c)(3) by virtue of their charitable programs. The collective mission of 501(c)(3) organizations in the Phoenix Valley is to improve the quality of life for community residents or to solve particular problems related to those residents’ needs. GCU maintains a partnership with Hope Women’s Center located at 1640 E. McDowell Road, Phoenix, AZ, 85006. Hope Women’s Center offer free life skills classes, mentoring, job training, and programs for expectant mothers, mothers, and children. The CSLP Intern’s work schedule is dependent on the hours of operations and needs of Hope Women’s Center; however, CSLP Interns may not work more than 20 hours per week during the academic year (i.e., fall/spring). CSLP: This position has been reviewed and approved as Community Service as defined by 34 CFR 675.2(b). Per 34 CFR 675.2(b), community services are defined as, “Services which are designed to improve the quality of life for community residents, particularly low-income individuals, or to solve particular problems related to their need.” These services must be open and accessible to the community. As an FWS-CSLP approved position, its services will be offered to non-GCU community members (i.e., local residents). Note: All FWS and FWS-CSLP positions require applicants to complete their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa to be reviewed for FWS-eligibility and awarded FWS.

Requirements

  • Enrolled at GCU as a full-time student in a bachelor’s program or master’s program.
  • Maintain a 2.0 GPA as a Bachelor level student or a 3.0 GPA as a Master level student.
  • Maintain good financial and academic (SAP) standing with the University.
  • Must have reliable transportation.

  • Previous Mentoring a plus.
  • Ability to speak a second language a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Care for children ages 0 – 5 while mothers use Hope Women’s Center (HWC) services.
  • Greet English- and Spanish-speaking visitors and answer their questions.
  • Provide bilingual support to courses taught in English.
  • Provide administrative and classroom technology support.
  • Assist as needed.
  • Coordinators may work at either the 1640 E. McDowell Road location or the 5608 N. 27th Avenue location depending on HWC needs.
