Product Manager, Identity

Tailscale
•$177,000 - $221,000•Remote

About The Position

Tailscale is seeking a Product Manager to own its Identity ecosystem, bridging its Zero Trust networking approach with customers’ existing identity infrastructure. Identity is foundational to access control: the role connects complex protocols such as OIDC, SAML, and SCIM with a seamless user experience. The Identity portfolio spans the end-to-end lifecycle of users and devices within a tailnet, including authentication through external identity providers, authorization through roles, groups, attributes, and network policies, and lifecycle management through onboarding, offboarding, and synchronization. These capabilities support enterprise deployments, including multi-identity-provider configurations and automated lifecycle management. The Product Manager will set the vision, strategy, and roadmap for identity products and experiences; improve administrators’ tools and end-user authentication; collaborate across engineering, product, and design; and build customer insight across Tailscale’s range of users. The role is remote-first, with the company primarily working remotely.

Requirements

  • 4–7 years of product management experience, with direct ownership of an identity product or platform.
  • Strong technical fluency in identity protocols, including OIDC, SAML, SCIM, WebAuthn, and OAuth flows.
  • Experience shipping products for developer or security-focused audiences, with an understanding of modern IAM friction points and how to build tools admins and developers enjoy using.
  • Demonstrated ability to own a product area end to end, including strategy, roadmap, execution, and customer relationships.
  • An operational mindset and understanding that downtime or misconfiguration in an identity product can be a security event.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience with Tailscale at work or home.
  • Background working with identity providers such as Okta, Azure Entra ID/Active Directory, or Google Workspace, or with Identity-Aware Proxy (IAP) architectures.
  • Experience with cloud-native identity concepts such as service mesh and workload identity federation.
  • Public technical writing, conference talks, or open-source contributions in the security or identity space.

Responsibilities

  • Own the vision, strategy, and roadmap for Tailscale’s Identity portfolio, including workload and agent identity, SSO integrations, Directory Sync (SCIM), access controls and policy, and user management.
  • Own the operator experience for administrators configuring identity providers, auditing authentication events, and managing user, workload, and agent access policies at scale across the admin console, API, and clients.
  • Build a fast, secure, and intuitive authentication experience for end users.
  • Partner with engineering, product, and design to ensure Tailscale’s identity service meets broader organizational needs and integrates with other platform components.
  • Build systematic customer insight across Tailscale users, from homelab operators to regulated enterprises.
  • Turn customer feedback, support patterns, cross-product requests, and competitive dynamics into roadmap priorities.

Benefits

  • Base salary, equity, and comprehensive benefits.
  • Inclusive and flexible work environment.
  • Comprehensive group health, vision, and dental benefits with no waiting period.
  • Remote-first work environment, with access to a corporate co-working program and virtual and in-person social events.
  • Employer retirement contributions matched dollar-for-dollar, up to an annual employer contribution of 0.75% of eligible compensation.
  • Annual company retreat, team off-sites, and support for team travel and in-person collaboration.
  • $1,500 USD annually for professional development, plus mentorship, coaching, and internal promotion opportunities.
  • Flexible paid time off.
  • Company-owned laptop (Mac or PC), monthly home internet reimbursement, and $500 USD to customize a home workstation.
  • Paid parental leave top-ups: 20 weeks for birthing parents and 16 weeks for non-birthing parents.
