The Person In Charge (PIC) exemplifies and ensures strong customer service and directs and controls Front End operations in the absence of store management to achieve sales and profit objectives. As a primary customer contact, the PIC provides friendly, courteous, and helpful service. In the absence of the Store Manager and First and Second Assistant Managers, the PIC is in charge of the store and has analogous authority to make necessary operating decisions in support of profitability, efficiency, and superior customer service. When in charge—generally at night—the PIC supervises store employees. The role also performs Cashier-Checker duties and may require working in various store departments. The PIC handles emergencies, customer complaints, and employee or customer accidents; supervises store personnel; monitors customer service and product replenishment on the sales floor; and supports a clean and safe work environment. Cashier duties include operating an electronically scanning register, receiving payments, making change, bagging groceries, and assisting customers with carryout when a Courtesy Clerk is unavailable. The position may also involve basic office functions, closing duties, counting out-of-stock products, and counting tills. The work is performed inside the store, with outdoor work described as rare. The role involves standing constantly, frequent walking, handling and grasping, repetitive motions, and lifting items of varying weights. The PIC may use a step stool when stocking or facing products on high shelves. This is a safety-sensitive position.
