Person In Charge (PIC)
About The Position
The Person In Charge (PIC) provides Safeway customers with friendly, courteous, and helpful service. When the Store Manager and First and Second Assistant Managers are absent, the PIC is in charge of the store and has analogous authority to make necessary operating decisions to support profitability, efficiency, and superior customer service. When in charge—generally at night—the PIC supervises store employees. The role also performs Cashier-Checker duties and may require work in many store departments. The PIC handles customer service, store operations, employee supervision, checkout, and basic office functions. The position may involve responding to emergencies and complaints, assisting with checkout equipment, replenishing products, maintaining a clean and safe store, and completing closing or inventory-related tasks. Duties may vary by store, and other duties may be assigned.
Requirements
- Ability to follow company customer service procedures.
- Demonstrated prior customer service skills or related experience.
- Ability to interact with customers and co-workers.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions.
- Knowledge of all positions within the store.
- Ability to work independently.

Responsibilities
- Provide customer service according to employer procedures and company policy.
- Handle emergencies, customer complaints, and employee or customer accidents appropriately.
- Supervise store personnel when the Store Manager and Assistant Managers are absent.
- Maintain familiarity with company policies and procedures.
- Supervise the sales floor to monitor customer service and product replenishment.
- Replace stock in displays surrounding the checkout area.
- Help maintain a clean and safe store environment.
- Assist cashiers with computer, register, and scanner problems.
- Perform basic office functions to assist customers and personnel.
- Operate an electronically scanning cash register, total customer bills, receive payment, and provide correct change.
- Bag groceries and lift bags into grocery carts.
- Offer carry-out assistance and perform carry-out duties when a Courtesy Clerk is unavailable.
- May complete the office close-of-day function.
- May count out-of-stock products and count tills when other cashier-checkers leave.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
