About The Position

The New Graduate RN Residency is a transition-to-practice program for newly licensed nurses at Boston Medical Center. Residents begin in a Medical Cardiac Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU)/Step Down setting caring for complex cardiac, medical, pulmonary, and renal patients, including patients with congestive heart failure and complex fluid-management needs. The unit has frequent transfers to and from the ICU and medical-surgical floors, as well as admissions from the Emergency Department and procedural areas. The role provides exposure to close monitoring and advanced therapies, including cardiac drips, mechanical ventilation, tracheostomies, chest tubes, pericardial drains, peritoneal dialysis, and post-procedure cardiac care. The residency incorporates the Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies and includes structured education, hands-on clinical experience, preceptorship, and ongoing support throughout orientation and the transition-to-practice period. Training lasts four months, after which RNs assume a position on a Step Down unit. The role encompasses nursing assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, evaluation, and coordination of care for patients and families across the health care continuum. The RN is accountable for clinical, educational, quality, and fiscal patient-care outcomes, following nursing department care models and established policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, and standards of practice. The position reports to the Unit Nurse Director. The program is for nurses who graduated from nursing school within the 12 months before their hire date. The posting specifies a March 2027 start and a 36-hour day/night rotating schedule. The job description states a two-year commitment for the Step Down units and also says that new graduates in non-critical-care BMC practice areas are expected to remain in their roles for at least one year after completing orientation.
