The New Graduate RN Residency is an entry-to-practice nursing role in a high-acuity Medical Cardiac Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU)/Step Down setting. Nurses care for medically complex cardiac, medical, pulmonary, and renal patients, including patients with congestive heart failure who require intensive fluid management and diuresis. The unit manages patients across changing levels of acuity, with frequent transfers to and from the ICU and medical-surgical floors, as well as admissions from the Emergency Department and procedural areas. The residency supports newly licensed nurses’ transition from nursing school to professional practice through structured education, hands-on clinical experience, preceptorship, and ongoing support. The program incorporates the Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies. After four months of training, RNs assume a position on a Step Down unit. The role encompasses nursing assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, evaluation, and coordination of care for patients and families across the health care continuum. The RN is accountable for clinical, educational, quality, and fiscal patient care outcomes, following nursing department models of care and established policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, and standards of practice. The position is for nurses who graduated from nursing school within the 12 months before their hire date. New graduates hired into critical care are expected to remain in that role for at least two years from hire. The posting also states that new graduate nurses in other BMC practice areas are expected to remain in their roles for at least one year after completing orientation; the program description separately states a two-year commitment for the Step Down unit. The expected start date is March 2027. The schedule is 36 hours, nights, with rotating weekends.
