About The Position

The New Graduate RN Residency is a transition-to-practice program for newly licensed nurses joining the Medical Cardiac Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU)/Step Down. The unit cares for complex cardiac, medical, pulmonary, and renal patients, including patients with congestive heart failure and intensive fluid-management needs. Nurses encounter frequent transfers between the ICU and medical-surgical floors, admissions from the Emergency Department and procedural areas, and patients requiring close monitoring and advanced therapies. The residency includes structured education, hands-on clinical experience, preceptorship, and ongoing support during orientation and transition to practice. The program lasts four months, after which nurses assume a position on a Step Down unit. It incorporates the Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies and is intended to strengthen clinical judgment and decision-making while supporting the transition from nursing student to professional practice. The position encompasses nursing assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, evaluation, and coordination of care for patients and families across the health care continuum. The RN is accountable for clinical, educational, quality, and fiscal patient-care outcomes and follows nursing department models of care and established policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, and standards of practice. The role reports to the Unit Nurse Director. The role is for nurses who graduated from nursing school within the 12 months before their hire date. The posting identifies an expected start in March 2027 and describes a 36-hour schedule with rotating days and nights and weekends. A two-year commitment is stated for the Step Down units after the investment in the new graduate RN. Nurses in other BMC practice areas are expected to remain in their roles for at least one year after completing orientation; the posting separately states a two-year minimum for new graduate nurses in critical care roles. Candidates must apply only to the Step Down New Grad program and submit an online application with a resume and letter of intent combined into one PDF. Candidates who also apply to experienced RN postings will not be considered for the program.
