About The Position

The New Graduate RN Residency is an entry pathway for newly licensed nurses to transition into professional nursing practice in a Medical Cardiac Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU)/Step Down setting. The unit cares for medically complex cardiac, medical, pulmonary, and renal patients, including patients with congestive heart failure who need intensive fluid management and diuresis. Nurses encounter frequent transfers to and from the ICU and medical-surgical floors, admissions from the Emergency Department and procedural areas, and patients requiring close monitoring and advanced therapies. The residency incorporates the Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies and provides structured education, hands-on clinical experience, preceptorship, and ongoing support through the orientation and transition-to-practice period. After four months of training, RNs assume a position on a Step Down unit. The role encompasses nursing assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, evaluation, and coordination of care for patients and families across the health care continuum. RNs are accountable for clinical, educational, quality, and fiscal patient-care outcomes while following nursing department models of care and established policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, and standards of practice. The position reports to the Unit Nurse Director. The posting describes a 36-hour night schedule with rotating weekends and an expected March 2027 start. Candidates must apply only to the Step Down New Grad program. The role is designated for nurses who graduated from nursing school within the twelve months before their hire date. Nurses entering critical care are expected to remain in that role for at least two years from hire; new graduates in other BMC practice areas are expected to remain for at least one year after completing orientation, which is marked by the ability to practice independently with a full assignment.
