About The Position

Boston Medical Center’s New Graduate Nurse Residency Program supports newly licensed nurses in transitioning from nursing school to professional practice. The program incorporates the Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies and provides structured training, hands-on clinical experience, preceptorship, and ongoing support. After four months of training, RNs assume a position on a Step Down unit. The role is intended for nurses who graduated from nursing school within the 12 months before their hire date. The position is in a fast-paced, high-acuity Medical Cardiac Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU), caring for complex cardiac, medical, pulmonary, and renal patients. Clinical exposure includes congestive heart failure and intensive fluid management, cardiac drips, patients transitioning to and from the ICU, tracheostomies and mechanical ventilation, chest tubes and pericardial drains, post-procedural cardiac patients, pulmonary hypertension, peritoneal dialysis, and other complex conditions. The residency helps nurses build clinical judgment, assessment, prioritization, communication, and critical-thinking skills while caring for patients with changing conditions. The registered nurse is accountable for clinical, educational, quality, and fiscal patient care outcomes. The role encompasses nursing assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, evaluation, and coordination of care for patients and families across the health care continuum, following nursing department care models and established policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, and standards of practice. The position reports to the Unit Nurse Director. The posting states an expected March 2027 start date and a 36-hour night schedule with rotating weekends. Nurses hired into the Step Down program are asked to make a two-year commitment; the posting also states that new graduate nurses in non-critical-care practice areas are expected to remain in their roles for at least one year after completing orientation.
