About The Position

The New Graduate RN Residency is a transition-to-practice program for newly licensed nurses joining Boston Medical Center. The program incorporates the Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies and provides structured education, hands-on clinical experience, preceptorship, and ongoing support. After four months of training, residents assume a position on a Step Down unit. The role is intended for nurses who graduated from nursing school within the 12 months before their hire date. The registered nurse assesses, diagnoses, plans, intervenes, evaluates, and coordinates care for patients and families across the health care continuum. The nurse is accountable for clinical, educational, quality, and fiscal patient-care outcomes, following the nursing department's model of care and established policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, and standards of practice. The position reports to the Unit Nurse Director. The Medical Cardiac IMCU provides care for complex cardiac, medical, pulmonary, and renal patients, including patients with congestive heart failure and intensive fluid-management needs. The fast-paced unit receives admissions from the Emergency Department and procedural areas and has frequent transfers to and from the ICU and medical-surgical floors. Residents develop assessment, prioritization, communication, and early-intervention skills while caring for patients with changing acuity and complex therapies.
