About The Position

The New Graduate RN Residency is a transition-to-practice program for newly licensed nurses, with the nurse assigned to a Medical Cardiac Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU)/Step Down unit. The IMCU cares for complex cardiac, medical, pulmonary, and renal patients, including patients with congestive heart failure and intensive fluid-management needs. The unit has frequent admissions and transfers from the Emergency Department, procedural areas, the ICU, and medical-surgical floors, and patients may require close monitoring and advanced therapies. The residency includes structured education, hands-on clinical experience, preceptorship, and ongoing support. The program incorporates the Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies and provides four months of training before nurses assume a position on a Step Down unit. Residents develop assessment, prioritization, clinical judgment, communication, teamwork, and other skills needed to care for patients across changing levels of acuity. The role encompasses nursing assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, evaluation, and coordination of care for patients and families across the health care continuum. The RN is accountable for clinical, educational, quality, and fiscal patient care outcomes and follows nursing department models of care and established policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, and standards of practice. The position reports to the Unit Nurse Director. The program is intended for nurses who graduated from nursing school within the 12 months before their hire date. Nurses hired into the program are expected to remain in their Step Down role for at least two years after the investment in the new graduate RN, as stated in the program description. The posting also states that new graduate nurses in non-critical-care BMC practice areas are expected to remain in their roles for at least one year after completing orientation.
