About The Position

Assists in the examination and treatment of patients under the direction of healthcare providers. Responsibilities include greeting and assisting patients, scheduling appointments, maintaining records and accounts, checking patients in and out, collecting payments, and verifying insurance. This PRN position involves varying days and hours per week, with typical clinic hours Monday-Friday 8 am-5 pm. The role requires travel between West Birmingham, Adamsville, Gardendale, Fultondale, and Homewood.

Requirements

  • Clinical Medical Assistant or Certified Medical Assistant active certificate; OR equivalent from two-year college or technical school; OR six months to one-year related experience and/or training.
  • Must be coachable and work within a team environment, helping peers as needed.
  • Must have a positive attitude and embrace the "we are all one team" acumen.
  • Knowledge of Word Processing software; Internet software, EMR systems (Athena preferred), and Database software.
  • Must be able to read and write legibly.
  • Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • The ability to travel to nearby clinics as needed.
  • This position requires the ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • It involves a full range of body motion, including handling and lifting patients and equipment.
  • Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 30 pounds and assist in moving patients weighing up to 300 pounds.
  • Regular exposure to bodily fluids and demands of adherence to strict safety and hygiene protocols.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a front desk medical receptionist preferred.
  • Skillful and knowledgeable in all aspects relating to the front office of a busy medical clinic.
  • Computer proficiency is required and software such as EMR (Athena and Epic), Word, Excel, and other programs are strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Interviews patients and accurately takes vital signs (manual BP, pulse rate, temperature, O2 level, weight, and height), recording information into EMR.
  • Prepares and stocks exam rooms for patient examinations.
  • Hands instruments and materials to providers as directed during procedures.
  • Cleans and sterilizes instruments.
  • Performs EKGs, urinalysis, strep tests, flu tests, COVID tests, mono tests, pregnancy tests, and checks patients' A1C.
  • Administers injections (intramuscular, intradermal, subcutaneous) per provider's orders.
  • Manages patient portal messages, refills medications, orders labs or imaging, and completes prior authorizations and precertifications.
  • Communicates effectively and instructs patients and/or their families as directed by the provider.
  • Discusses results with patients via phone, maintaining confidentiality.
  • Enters data into EMR to maintain office and patient records.
  • May perform duties outside normal responsibilities as needed or directed by supervision, such as assisting with patient check-in.
  • Greets patients and visitors in person or by phone, answering or referring inquiries.
  • Schedules patient appointments to optimize patient satisfaction, provider time, and treatment room utilization.
  • Keeps patient appointments on schedule by notifying providers of patient arrivals and reminding them of service delays.
  • Maintains the reception area and comforts patients by anticipating anxieties and answering questions.
  • Files and retrieves patient records to ensure availability of treatment information.
  • Maintains patient accounts by obtaining, recording, and updating personal and financial information.
  • Records and updates financial information, collects patient charges, controls credit, and expedites third-party claims.
  • Maintains business office inventory and equipment by checking stock, anticipating supplies, placing orders, verifying receipt, and scheduling equipment service.
  • Responds to emergencies to help patients in distress.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Follows policies and procedures and reports needed changes.
  • Contributes to team effort.
  • Assists patients with mobility and transport needs within the clinical setting, including helping patients in and out of wheelchairs or exam tables, escorting or transporting patients, and ensuring their comfort and safety.
  • Monitors patients during transport for signs of distress, maintains cleanliness of transport equipment, and provides emotional support.
