About The Position

BJ’s Wholesale Club is powered by more than 30,000 team members. The Licensed Optical Manager is responsible for performing all the duties required of an optician, in addition to managerial duties. This position involves managing, teaching, and coaching the optical team members, interacting with Members, confirming appointments, and ensuring department upkeep. The Optical Manager acts as a liaison between members and the lab to ensure timely order processing. The role requires strategic thinking, sound decision-making using business data, and leading through change. The manager is expected to model leadership competencies, build credibility, and champion business growth by communicating effectively and providing necessary information to teams. They are responsible for building high-performing teams, fostering collaboration, and providing honest and timely feedback to drive results and engagement. The manager will teach, coach, and lead through the club-level training process, support team member engagement, and ensure the application of policies and procedures. They must drive a culture of development, ethical decision-making, and engagement, while ensuring a safe and positive environment for both team members and members. The role also involves guaranteeing service excellence, setting service standards, empowering the team to resolve member concerns, and maintaining GOLD Club Standards daily, which includes stocking, executing planograms, accurate signage, and cleanliness. Furthermore, the manager must acquire deep knowledge of key metrics and reporting for club and department performance, driving profitability by identifying trends and opportunities, and correcting process breakdowns before they negatively impact performance.

Requirements

  • Must be licensed to work as an optician within the State and keep license up to date and active.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities, including managing/supervising cross-functional teams, training team members, and driving and communicating results.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, customer service skills, organizational skills and an attention to detail required.
  • Open shift availability required.
  • At least 18 years of age.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of optical products and business practices preferred.
  • High school diploma, college degree, and/or big box wholesale, retail, optical, and/or management experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all duties required of an optician.
  • Manage, teach, and coach optical team members.
  • Interact with Members, including answering all incoming calls, scheduling patients for eye exams, and maintaining a friendly, pleasant demeanor.
  • Confirm appointments and ensure department upkeep.
  • Serve as the liaison between members and the lab to ensure timely order processing.
  • Provide support to Members in making eyeglass adjustments, taking measurements, reading prescriptions on the lensometer, and timely notification of product readiness.
  • Handle all money-related transactions and complete necessary paperwork to place and process orders.
  • Manage all sales opening and closing procedures at the end of the shift, ensuring accurate funds are collected and payments are made.
  • Strive to deliver sales and metric goals by educating patients on the benefits of available products and recommending those that will improve their visual needs.
  • Engage with members in front of Optical during downtime.
  • Communicate and follow up with Club Manager and Regional Optical Manager regarding department performance, maintenance situations, team member’s performance, and doctor relations.
  • Ensure workstation/Optical department is always maintained and clean.
  • Supervise all team members in the Optical department and is responsible for training, separations, recommendation for promotions, and coaching.
  • Maintain all club policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to all privacy and confidential/proprietary company policies and procedures (e.g., HIPAA) due to access to patient information.
  • Ensure regular, predictable, full attendance.
