There are two part-time Library Assistant positions available. Tentative hours are five and a half hours per day, five days per week, for ten months per year. The hiring process will also establish eligibility lists for Library Assistant and Library Assistant-Bilingual (Spanish) positions to fill current and future vacancies and substitute needs during the following six months. Applicants seeking the bilingual position must indicate this in the supplemental questions and demonstrate Spanish speaking and reading ability during testing. The Library Assistant provides assistance to students and teachers in locating materials and using library resources. Duties include handling circulation, such as checking books in and out, receiving and shelving materials; operating a computer to maintain circulation and inventory records; and assisting teachers in locating instructional materials in a resource center. Positions are assigned to an elementary library or resource center, or an intermediate or high school library. Depending on the assignment, incumbents manage day-to-day library operations, ranging from structured classroom visits to open access. Work is normally performed under minimal supervision from a school principal or, at high schools, a Librarian. The role requires specialized knowledge of library systems and direct work with groups of students. Employees work primarily inside a school library or resource center, with frequent interruptions and direct contact with students and the public. The work may require standing, walking, sitting, bending, lifting and carrying materials, and repetitive hand and wrist motions. New employees are subject to a physical examination, tuberculosis test, background review, and verification of authorization to work in the United States. Employment start is contingent on fingerprinting and criminal background clearance.
