About The Position

The Attorney General & Dept of Law is seeking a Legal Secretary for the Employment Unit. This role provides essential secretarial and paralegal support to attorneys in the Employment Unit-Trial Section and backup support to the General Civil/Unit of the Trial Section. The position involves a wide range of duties including managing case files, preparing legal documents, communicating with clients and counsel, and handling administrative tasks related to active trial practice.

Requirements

  • A minimum of three to five (5) years working in an employment law practice.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in time management.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and adjust priorities without close supervision.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Subject to a criminal background check.

Responsibilities

  • Provide secretarial support to up to seven Employment Unit-Trial Section attorneys and backup secretarial support to attorneys in the General Civil/Unit of the Trial Section.
  • Prioritize work assigned by attorneys.
  • Type and edit briefs, pleadings, discovery requests and responses, correspondence, and memoranda, and prepare them for filing.
  • Draft correspondence for attorneys' signatures.
  • Proofread and perform quality checks on all work product, referring to legal databases and style guides.
  • Scan pleadings and correspondence into an electronic database.
  • Attend to all aspects of discovery.
  • Manage the opening of new cases and closing of ended cases in the Office’s case management database.
  • Perform other administrative tasks related to active trial practice.
  • Establish files and organize/maintain electronic files for all discovery.
  • Upload discovery documents to file sharing platforms.
  • Communicate with clients, experts, and opposing counsel.
  • Prepare trial exhibits and materials.
  • Contact and schedule witnesses for meetings and depositions.
  • Prepare and track subpoenas and arrange for service.
  • Prepare and process travel vouchers and requests for travel, as well as purchase, reimbursement, and payment forms.
  • Arrange for conference rooms and schedule court reporters.
  • Provide backup secretarial support to other units in the Trial Section.
  • Electronically file documents in various courts using specified systems.
