About The Position

Lead an electrical engineering project team designing, modifying, and analyzing electrical systems for nuclear material processing, nuclear waste treatment, storage and disposal systems, and commercial nuclear power plants. The work includes challenging assignments involving design, investigation, troubleshooting, and resolution of a wide range of electrical engineering issues. The position has a hybrid work arrangement, combining work from home and office work. The role leads and coordinates detailed electrical design phases, helps ensure projects are completed satisfactorily, on time, and within budget, and coordinates systems design to meet specifications, codes, and client requirements. It also involves technical review, vendor coordination, preparation of calculations, specifications, reports, and design documentation, as well as mentoring less experienced engineers and sharing expertise through the company’s peer-learning practices. Sargent & Lundy’s Government Services Division supports U.S. Department of Energy sites and national laboratories, including the DOE Environmental Management Directorate and National Nuclear Security Administration laboratories and sites. Its projects include facilities, systems, and equipment for treating, storing, and disposing of nuclear waste and safely handling and processing nuclear material.

  • Experience selecting equipment and materials, developing control philosophy, and preparing and assembling calculations and specifications.
  • Experience designing electrical systems, including low-voltage distribution systems such as transformers, generators, and motors; communication systems; equipment selection; and analytical calculations.
  • At least 3 years of experience leading an engineering design team through all phases of project design.
  • Technical knowledge of available equipment and proven pre-engineered systems used to execute systems design.
  • Experience serving as a firm/client liaison in a support or lead engineering role.
  • Experience reviewing design drawings created by others.

Nice To Haves

  • Master of Science in Electrical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer license.

  • Lead efforts to ensure projects are completed satisfactorily, on time, and within budget.
  • Coordinate systems design activities to ensure installation and operations comply with specifications, codes, and client requirements.
  • Prepare and review detailed electrical calculations, including arc flash, voltage drop, fault current, and lighting calculations.
  • Prepare design-input documentation for drawing production, including master diagrams and master schematics.
  • Interface with vendors to prepare materials and equipment purchase specifications for client recommendations.
  • Prepare reports and studies that present technical information clearly and concisely and meet client requirements and company formats.
  • Independently review work performed by others, including calculations and drawing preparation.
  • Share knowledge with experienced engineers through peer learning and the company’s systems and Communities of Practice.
  • Mentor and guide less experienced engineers.
