About The Position

The Lead Clerk assists store management with operations by performing clerk duties in the designated grocery or freight department, leading by example, and assisting the department manager with general department operations as directed. The role provides friendly, efficient customer service, responds professionally to customer questions and complaints, and performs grocery clerk, cashier, and/or freight stocker duties. The Lead Clerk also supports assigned employees by providing direction, demonstrating tasks, answering questions, and monitoring breaks and lunches. Other related duties may be assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Communicate clearly and professionally, using strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills, and establish and maintain rapport with coworkers, supervisors, vendors, customers, and others.
• Provide leadership and maintain composure while professionally addressing difficult or angry customers, vendors, and coworkers.
• Understand company practices, policies, and procedures well enough to evaluate and respond to customer activity.
• Demonstrate initiative and self-direction while multitasking across a variety of duties.
• Conduct visual inspections and read reports, computer printouts, register screens, and computer screens.
• Perform basic arithmetic and calculate weights and measures.
• Perform primary duties efficiently and accurately, with honesty and integrity.
• Meet the minimum age requirement: 18 years old in Montana and Oregon; 21 years old in all other states.
• Work varied shifts in a 24/7 operation, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Perform all duties described in the relevant department-specific job description for grocery clerk, cashier, and/or freight stocker.
• Understand company practices through previous experience in the designated grocery or freight department, or equivalent.
• Use cleaning chemicals properly according to manufacturer guidelines and instructions.
• Handle food products according to state and county laws and WinCo standards.
• Reach, lift, and maneuver objects of varying dimensions and weights up to 50 pounds frequently.
• Stand for long periods and frequently walk, move rapidly, bend, stoop, twist, and turn.
• Perform duties with mental alertness around potential hazards involving procedures, machines, equipment, and work aids.
• Understand state and federal regulations when certification is required.
• Hold a Food Handlers Certification where required by state law.

Responsibilities

• Welcome, engage, serve, and thank customers while maintaining an atmosphere of friendly, enthusiastic service.
• Perform clerk duties in the designated grocery or freight department; refer to the applicable Grocery Clerk, Cashier/Checker, or Freight Stocker description for the full duties.
• Handle customer complaints and requests; duties may include approving checks, selling gift certificates, issuing refunds, receiving returned-check payments, and answering customer questions.
• Monitor area activities, including customer traffic flow and checkout-lane coverage.
• Maintain cleanliness and appearance of the work area, storage areas, equipment, and displays; clean by mopping, sweeping, and removing garbage.
• Keep the assigned department or area clear of excess carts, baskets, and garbage.
• Monitor employee arrivals, breaks, lunches, and departures, and communicate regularly with the immediate supervisor.
• Assist the immediate supervisor as needed or directed.
• Provide clerks with direction and leadership, demonstrate clerk responsibilities and assigned tasks, and answer employee questions.
• May monitor cashier money-handling procedures and assist with scan-system procedures, including UPCs not on file and scan-pricing errors.
• May stock department racks, shelves, displays, and coolers; use cleaning materials, machines, and equipment; pull cardboard; face walls and aisles; perform cashier duties; and complete other assigned tasks.
• Maintain awareness of customer and employee safety.
• Stock and rotate merchandise in any store area as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned or needed.
