About The Position

The Lead Clerk assists store management with operations by performing clerk duties in the assigned grocery or freight department, leading by example, and supporting the department manager with general operations as directed. The role includes delivering fast, friendly customer service; answering customer questions and complaints professionally; performing grocery clerk, cashier, and/or freight stocker duties; and helping assigned employees complete their work, including coordinating breaks and lunches. The Lead Clerk may also perform other related duties as needed.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Communicate clearly and professionally, using strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills, and establish and maintain rapport with coworkers, supervisors, vendors, customers, and others.
Provide leadership and maintain composure while professionally addressing difficult or angry customers, vendors, and coworkers.
Understand company practices, policies, and procedures well enough to judge and respond effectively to customer activity.
Demonstrate initiative and self-direction while multitasking.
Conduct visual inspections and read reports, computer printouts, register screens, and computer screens.
Perform basic arithmetic and compute weights and measures.
Perform primary duties efficiently and accurately, with honesty and integrity.
Meet the minimum age requirement: 18 in Montana and Oregon, and 21 in all other states.
Consistently provide high-quality customer service to internal and external customers.
Work varied shifts in a 24/7 operation, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Perform the duties described in the applicable department-specific job description for grocery clerk, cashier, and/or freight stocker.
Understand company practices through prior experience in the designated department or equivalent.
Use cleaning chemicals properly according to manufacturer guidelines and instructions.
Handle food products according to state and county laws and WinCo standards.
Reach, lift, and maneuver objects of varying dimensions and weights up to 50 pounds frequently.
Stand for long periods and walk, move rapidly, bend, stoop, twist, and turn frequently.
Perform duties with mental alertness regarding hazards associated with procedures, machines, equipment, and work aids.
Understand state and federal regulations if certification is needed.
Hold a Food Handlers Certification where required by state law.

Responsibilities

Welcome, engage, serve, and thank customers while maintaining an atmosphere of friendly, enthusiastic customer service.
Perform clerk duties in the assigned grocery or freight department, with responsibilities described in the applicable Grocery Clerk, Cashier/Checker, and/or Freight Stocker job descriptions.
Lead in customer service, including handling complaints and requests, approving checks, selling gift certificates, issuing refunds, receiving returned check payments, and answering customer questions.
Monitor activity in the assigned area, including customer traffic and checkout-lane coverage.
Maintain the cleanliness and appearance of work, storage, and display areas in accordance with company policy and applicable regulations; clean by mopping, sweeping, and removing garbage.
Keep the assigned department or area clear of excess carts, baskets, and garbage.
Monitor employee arrivals, breaks, lunches, and departures, and communicate regularly with the immediate supervisor.
Assist the immediate supervisor as needed or directed.
Provide direction and leadership to clerks, demonstrate and perform clerk duties, and answer employee questions.
Monitor cashier money-handling procedures and assist with scan-system procedures, when needed.
Perform tasks such as stocking department racks, shelves, displays, and coolers; using cleaning materials and department equipment; pulling cardboard; facing shelves and aisles; cashiering; and other assigned duties.
Maintain awareness of customer and employee safety.
Stock and rotate merchandise in any store area as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned or needed.
