Mel Trotter Ministries is a faith-based nonprofit providing safe shelter and supportive services to people experiencing homelessness. The Intake Specialist provides a welcoming presence during afternoon and evening hours, helping guests connect with support, get oriented, and settle in while maintaining a safe, orderly environment. The role works closely with Triage Specialists, Case Managers, and other team members, using compassion, clear communication, and a steady presence in guest interactions. The position is onsite in Grand Rapids and follows four consecutive 10-hour shifts, including Saturdays and Sundays, followed by three consecutive days off. Duties include welcoming arrivals, answering questions, directing guests, helping them locate assigned beds and navigate shelter spaces, making rounds and perimeter checks, monitoring cameras and radio traffic, and responding to tensions with trauma-informed, non-physical de-escalation. The Specialist coordinates with medical personnel or law enforcement when needed, helps keep storage, shower, and heat treatment areas clean and ready, supports the Clinic, Sobering Center, and Detox rooms as requested, and completes accurate digital documentation and shift updates.
