About The Position

The Veterans Canteen Service at the West Haven, Connecticut VA Medical Center is hiring part-time Food Service Workers to provide service in its cafes and retail markets. The role involves preparing beverages and a variety of food items, maintaining cleanliness and sanitation, and storing food properly. Workers follow approved procedures and customer orders or supervisors’ instructions and may be exposed to hot and cold temperatures. Other duties may be assigned.

Requirements

• A current, valid REAL ID is required to work at Veterans Canteen Service.
• Ability to read instructions and perform basic math for food preparation.
• Must be able to stand constantly, walk, bend frequently, and lift or move objects weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Selective Service registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
• Subject to a background/security investigation.
• Must serve a one-year trial period and receive written certification for continued employment.

Nice To Haves

• At least one year of experience in the food service industry is preferred but not necessary.

Responsibilities

• Prepare beverages such as coffee, lattes, cappuccinos, and smoothies.
• Prepare and assemble food items such as breakfast and lunch sandwiches, wraps, pancakes, and burritos.
• Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of the workplace, equipment, and utensils in compliance with health and safety standards.
• Store food properly to maintain freshness and prevent spoilage.
• Prepare food according to customer orders or supervisors’ instructions, following approved procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
