About The Position

The Veterans Canteen Service (VCS) is hiring part-time Food Service Workers for its cafes and retail markets at the VA Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. The role provides service to customers in a fast-paced environment and supports VCS’s mission of serving America’s Heroes.

Food Service Workers prepare beverages and a variety of food items, fulfill customer orders or supervisor instructions using approved procedures, and maintain food freshness and workplace cleanliness in accordance with health and safety standards. The work involves exposure to hot and cold temperatures, constant standing and walking, frequent bending, and moving objects weighing up to 40 pounds without assistance.

Requirements

• A current, valid REAL ID is required to work at Veterans Canteen Service.
• Ability to read instructions and perform basic math for food preparation.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Must be able to stand and walk constantly and bend frequently.
• Must be able to lift or move objects weighing up to 40 pounds without assistance.
• Must complete a one-year trial period; continued employment after the trial period requires written certification that it advances the public interest.
• Selective Service registration is required for males born after December 31, 1959.
• Subject to a background/security investigation.

Nice To Haves

• At least one year of experience in the food service industry is preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

• Prepare beverages such as coffee, lattes, cappuccinos, and smoothies.
• Prepare and assemble food items such as breakfast and lunch sandwiches, wraps, pancakes, and burritos.
• Prepare foods according to customer orders or supervisors’ instructions and follow approved procedures.
• Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of the workplace, equipment, and utensils in compliance with health and safety standards.
• Store food properly to maintain freshness and prevent spoilage.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
