About The Position

Veterans Canteen Service is hiring full-time Food Service Workers at the Sacramento, California VA Medical Center. The role provides service in cafes and retail markets in a fast-paced environment and serves Veterans. Workers prepare beverages and a variety of food items to customer orders or supervisors’ instructions, follow approved procedures, and maintain cleanliness, sanitation, and food freshness. The position includes exposure to varying hot and cold temperatures. Employees must serve a one-year trial period, during which the agency evaluates their fitness and whether continued employment advances the public interest. Additional employment conditions include Selective Service registration for males born after December 31, 1959, and a background/security investigation.

Requirements

A current, valid REAL ID is required to work at Veterans Canteen Service.
Ability to read instructions and perform basic math for food preparation.
Ability to stand constantly, walk, and bend frequently.
Ability to lift or move objects weighing up to 40 pounds without assistance.
Excellent customer service skills.
Subject to a background/security investigation.
Males born after December 31, 1959, must register with Selective Service.

Nice To Haves

At least one year of experience in the food service industry is preferred but not necessary.

Responsibilities

Prepare beverages such as coffee, lattes, cappuccinos, and smoothies.
Prepare and assemble food items such as breakfast and lunch sandwiches, wraps, pancakes, and burritos.
Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of the workplace, equipment, and utensils in compliance with health and safety standards.
Store food properly to maintain freshness and prevent spoilage.
Prepare foods according to customer orders or supervisors’ instructions, following approved procedures.
Perform other duties as assigned.
