About The Position

The Veterans Canteen Service is seeking a Cook for the Sacramento VA Medical Center Canteen. The Cook prepares and cooks food for breakfast and lunch service, follows recipes and food labels to meet preparation standards, and maintains kitchen cleanliness and sanitation. The role is in a fast-paced environment serving Veterans and their families. Other duties may be assigned.

Employment is subject to a one-year trial period. During that period, the agency evaluates the employee’s performance and conduct, agency needs, and whether continued employment advances the public interest. Continued employment after the trial period requires written certification. Additional conditions include Selective Service registration for males born after December 31, 1959, and a background/security investigation.

Requirements

• At least one year of experience in cooking and food safety.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Knowledge of measurements and ability to multiply or divide recipes to meet daily needs.
• A current, valid REAL ID is required to work at Veterans Canteen Service.
• Must be able to stand constantly, walk constantly, and bend frequently.
• Must be able to lift or move objects weighing up to 40 pounds without assistance.
• Males born after December 31, 1959, must meet Selective Service registration requirements.
• Must be subject to a background/security investigation.
• Must serve a one-year trial period, with continued employment subject to written certification that it advances the public interest.

Nice To Haves

• ServSafe Food Handler certification is preferred.
