About The Position

Cordell & Cordell is seeking motivated second-year law students with an interest in family law for its paid Summer Associate Program. The program is designed to mirror the experience of a first-year associate, offering practical legal work, direct mentorship, and professional development while working alongside experienced attorneys and firm leaders. The position is based in an assigned office for the duration of the program; the posting lists Sacramento, California, among the 2027 locations. Candidates must be able to relocate to or reside in the assigned office location during the program and be flexible about their location after graduation. Many program participants are offered part-time law clerk positions during their third year and full-time positions after graduation, though long-term locations may differ from the summer office. The role is not eligible for the full-time benefits package or additional rewards such as merit increases and bonuses. The stated hourly pay rate is $35.

Requirements

Be a current second-year law student (2028 graduate) in good standing at an accredited law school.
Demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in family law.
Have a law school GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Be able to relocate to or reside in the assigned office location for the duration of the program.
Be flexible about destinations upon graduation from law school.
Have strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

Draft and analyze legal documents in active family law matters.
Conduct legal research and assist with preparing trial materials.
Attend court proceedings with experienced attorneys.
Participate in client meetings and gain insight into case strategy.
Work closely with a Litigation Partner to develop a foundational understanding of family law practice.
Participate in firm-sponsored networking and social events.
Perform other tasks as needed to help run the business.
