About The Position

Herzog Contracting Corp. is seeking a Field Training Specialist at its St. Joseph, Missouri training location. This role delivers in-person onboarding and operational skills training for Specialized Railroad Maintenance-of-Way (MOW) employees. The specialist facilitates a multi-phase new-hire program that includes classroom and field orientation followed by extended field training, monitors trainee performance after field assignment, and verifies operational readiness before employees work independently. The role also supports completion of new-hire On-the-Job Training (OJT), ongoing skills validation, refresher training, and employee certification needs.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
High attention to detail and strict adherence to training programs.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
Ability to work well with others and promote commitment to and enthusiasm for a safe work environment throughout the company.
Strong communication skills.
Pass a pre-employment background check and motor vehicle report review.
Pass a pre-employment physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen.
Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis.
Meet the role’s physical requirements, including walking on uneven surfaces; occasionally using step ladders or stairs; regularly sitting, standing, kneeling, bending, and squatting; passing applicable color and vision examinations; hearing and distinguishing required auditory signals; and working around loud noise and heavy or moving machinery, outdoors in all weather conditions.

Nice To Haves

Previous railroad or construction-related experience.
Experience with or knowledge of heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
Experience with or knowledge of DOT regulations.
Previous experience delivering training content, classroom instruction, and using Learning Management Systems (LMS).

Responsibilities

Facilitate in-person new-hire orientation covering railroad safety, rules, policies, certifications, and field familiarization.
Assist with the Specialized Equipment Operator field training program, including equipment use, job duties, safety procedures, and hands-on instruction.
Conduct classroom and field instruction on Roadway Worker Protection, Blue Signal Protection, communication procedures, regulatory training, practical switching, and track safety.
Facilitate the company Driver Training Program for employees who operate fleet vehicles, commercial vehicles, or other equipment.
Complete, validate, and record OJT checklists and training documentation for each new hire.
Verify employees complete all required training before field deployment.
Track trainee progress after deployment using field reports, supervisor feedback, and skill-readiness observations.
Communicate trainee status, readiness levels, and remaining skill gaps to the Operations Management team and Training Manager.
Maintain instructional materials, schedules, presentations, and job aids for field training programs.
Conduct annual refresher training for existing employees.
Recommend improvements to training processes and materials.
Assist with employee training needs and tracking to acquire and maintain necessary certifications.
Regularly engage in, participate in, and promote Herzog’s culture and essential behaviors.
Maintain regular and predictable attendance and punctuality.
Perform other duties as assigned.
