About The Position

Lumen is hiring a Field Technician II to install, decommission, troubleshoot, maintain, and test network equipment and circuits across a geographic area. Under minimal supervision and using established guidelines, procedures, and policies, the technician performs all functions required of a Field Technician I and supports fiber, transport equipment, and critical infrastructure. The role includes circuit provisioning, maintenance, and testing; installation and acceptance of telecommunications equipment; and responsibility for the outside plant network, including metro and long-haul fiber. The position may also involve managing large network builds and performing limited AC power work and DC power installations. The technician maintains equipment and materials, completes inventory and system updates, reports assignment status and problems to management, and supports colleagues as needed. The role requires on-call availability 24x7 on a rotational basis, including standby, callouts, dispatch, and overtime as business needs dictate. Work includes physical activity and may take place in all weather conditions.

Requirements

At least 2 years of experience installing, testing, and turning up telecommunications equipment, including SONET, DCS, DWDM, routers, and switches.
Strong technical and mechanical background, including experience with current-generation transport equipment and critical infrastructure such as HVAC systems, high-voltage electrical systems, and DC power plants.
Knowledge of locating fiber optic cable, rights-of-way, and as-built documentation.
Experience and/or knowledge in at least two of these technician disciplines: Transmission (DS1/DS3/SONET), Switching (circuit switching/SS7), TCP/IP (routers and higher-layer protocols), and Outside Plant (fiber locating, OTDR, mass fusion splicing, etc.).
Technical evaluation skills and fundamental judgment, and ability to build an internal and external network.
PC skills and proficiency with Microsoft Windows and Office applications.
Ability to quickly learn corporate databases.
Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
High school diploma or GED.
Attention to detail and good organizational capabilities.
Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively.
Ability to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl; lift 50 pounds; and work in all weather conditions.
Availability for 24x7 rotational on-call duty, standby, callouts, dispatch, and overtime as dictated by the business.

Responsibilities

Troubleshoot network equipment, replace defective equipment, isolate network problems, and help restore service.
Proactively identify potential network problem areas and assist other personnel with troubleshooting and restoration activities.
Install, change, decommission, and test network technologies, including Edge Compute, wavelength services, fiber optic transport, Ethernet, SONET, and IP network layers.
Install and test network and customer-premises equipment, including delivery of end-user services.
Perform limited AC power work and install DC power, including tertiary and BDCBB installations.
Manage large network-build projects and related project-management duties.
Use industry-standard software and hardware to locate, mark, and protect underground outside-plant facilities.
Manage assets and replenish on-site and truck materials; coordinate shipment and receipt of company and customer materials; maintain tools, test sets, and network equipment.
Perform level 1 preventive scheduled maintenance and inspections on network and critical infrastructure equipment, including HVAC systems, high-voltage electrical systems, and DC power plants.
Update inventory and transaction records, enter time logs, respond to information requests and escalations, and provide management with status updates and reports on assignment issues.
Maintain site security and cleanliness.
Provide on-call coverage, standby, callout, dispatch, and overtime as required by business needs.
