About The Position

Omega Technical Services is seeking an experienced mechanical designer to support the W93 Systems Development and Realization group in Los Alamos, New Mexico. The role focuses on checking design definition and requires expertise in 3D CAD, hardware design and fabrication, GD&T, and engineering concepts. The successful candidate may guide diverse teams through design iterations to address potential engineering defects. Work is expected to meet expert standards with minimal direction and to resolve complex or unique problems using ingenuity, creativity, and independence. The role may include mentoring junior staff in model-based definition (MBD) and GD&T. The position supports the W93/Mk7 Systems Development and Realization Group, which defines, develops, and fields the warhead system for a new Navy submarine-launched ballistic missile program. The group works with DoD/Navy SSP and DoE/NNSA customers, Sandia National Laboratories, Lockheed Martin Space, and production agency teams on requirements, design, qualification, and realization activities. The work schedule is dependent upon customer-site discretion. Candidates must be U.S. citizens, pass the stated pre-employment screening, and be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Security Clearance.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must obtain satisfactory pre-employment screening results, including a drug and breath alcohol test and a Motor Vehicle Record check.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Security Clearance.
  • Advanced understanding of mechanical CAD.
  • Experience with mechanical CAD, manufacturing, inspection, assembly, and testing.
  • Experience checking Creo models and drawings for form, fit, and function and MBD.
  • Experience conducting tolerance and stack analyses and complying with current design standards.
  • Mechanical design experience ensuring product definition meets requirements and supports producibility while reducing rejected products.
  • Knowledge and experience with MBD, including recommending best practices or improvements while maintaining compliance with NNSA, LANL, and industry standards.
  • Experience with Creo 3D CAD software, PDMLink PLM, GD&T, and tolerance stack-up analysis software.
  • Familiarity with ASME Y14 standards, especially Y14.5-2009 and Y14.41 MBD.
  • Experience developing and interpreting 3D CAD model standards, practices, and procedures for communicating design intent internally and to other National Security Enterprise organizations.
  • Knowledge of hardware fabrication, inspection, and assembly processes.
  • Experience with weapon-system configuration management workflows for product-definition materials.
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks for varied customers and ensure product definition meets requirements and design intent.
  • Experience leading reviews for design, manufacture, assembly, and testing.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to develop constructive, cooperative working relationships and support cross-disciplinary product-development teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Active DOE or DoD clearance within the past two years.
  • Previous DOE/NNSA work experience.
  • Drafting or design experience in both weapons and non-weapons arenas.
  • Experience developing and implementing organizational design or drafting standards.

Responsibilities

  • Check mechanical design definitions, including Creo models and drawings, for form, fit, and function and model-based definition.
  • Conduct tolerance and stack analyses and ensure compliance with applicable design standards.
  • Develop and assess product definitions to meet requirements and design intent while supporting producibility and reducing rejected products.
  • Recommend MBD best practices and improvement methods while maintaining compliance with NNSA, LANL, and industry standards.
  • Develop and interpret 3D CAD model standards, practices, and procedures for communicating design intent within and across National Security Enterprise organizations.
  • Support weapon-system configuration management workflows for authorization, review, release, and distribution of models, drawings, specifications, and related product definition.
  • Manage multiple tasks for a variety of customers to ensure product definition meets requirements and design intent.
  • Lead reviews for design, manufacture, assembly, and testing.
  • Guide teams through design iterations to address potential engineering defects.
