Engineering Technologist 3 (Mechanical Design Checker)

COMPA Industries•Los Alamos, NM
•$63 - $70•Onsite

About The Position

COMPA Industries is recruiting an Engineering Technologist 3 to check design definition for the W93/Mk7 Systems Development and Realization group at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The role focuses on mechanical design checking and requires broad expertise in 3D CAD, hardware design and fabrication, GD&T, and engineering concepts. Completed work is expected to meet expert standards with little direction; solutions may be original and influence the overall project. The W93/Mk7 group defines, develops, and fields a warhead system for the Navy’s newest submarine-launched ballistic missile program, supporting DoD/Navy Strategic Systems Programs and DOE/NNSA customers. The group coordinates with Sandia National Laboratories, Lockheed Martin Space, and production agency teams across the Nuclear Security Enterprise. The program is in early design and moves quickly, with product and design definitions frequently changing. The work is primarily office-based and on-site at Technical Area 3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico. This is a two-year contract assignment, with a possible extension at the hiring organization’s discretion; conversion is not anticipated. The stated pay rate is $63–$70 per hour. The standard schedule is 5/8s, with 9/80 and 4/10 schedules also common in the group. A DOE Q clearance is required, and candidates must be able to obtain and maintain it; U.S. citizenship is required. An active Q clearance is preferred. Per diem and relocation assistance are available for eligible candidates.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Science, Math, or a related field from an accredited institution, plus 8 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of directly related education and experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Advanced mechanical CAD experience spanning design, manufacturing, inspection, assembly, and testing.
  • Experience checking Creo models and drawings for form, fit, function, and MBD.
  • Proven experience with Creo 3D CAD, PDMLink Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), GD&T, and tolerance stack-up analysis software.
  • Working application of ASME Y14 standards, especially Y14.5-2009 and Y14.41 (MBD).
  • Strong experience on another CAD platform may be considered if the candidate can demonstrate a successful transition to Creo; the group works in Creo 12.
  • Knowledge of hardware fabrication, inspection, and assembly processes.
  • Experience with weapon-system configuration management workflows for release and distribution of product definition.
  • Effective written and verbal communication and a record of building cooperative working relationships across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Independent time management, attention to detail, prioritization, and comfort working in a fast-paced environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Drafting or design experience in both weapons and non-weapons arenas.
  • Experience developing and implementing organizational design or drafting standards.
  • Previous model or drawing checking experience in the Nuclear Security Enterprise.
  • Prior DOE experience.
  • Active DOE Q clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Check Creo models and drawings for form, fit, and function, and for compliance with Model-Based Definition (MBD) practices and current design standards.
  • Conduct tolerance and stack-up analyses.
  • Ensure product definition meets requirements and design intent, is producible, and helps reduce rejected product.
  • Guide teams from diverse technical backgrounds through design iterations to identify and resolve potential engineering defects.
  • Lead design, manufacturing, assembly, and test reviews.
  • Recommend MBD best practices and process improvements while maintaining compliance with NNSA, LANL, and industry standards.
  • Develop and interpret 3D CAD model standards, practices, and procedures for communicating design intent within LANL and across the Nuclear Security Enterprise.
  • Work within weapon-system configuration management workflows for authorization, review, release, and distribution of models, drawings, specifications, and related product definition.
  • Support multiple tasks and customers in collaboration with engineers, physicists, scientists, technologists, and technicians.
  • Mentor junior staff on model-based definition and GD&T as needed.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation.
  • Per diem and relocation assistance for eligible candidates.
  • A collaborative culture.
  • The opportunity to work on national security and mission-critical challenges.
