Engineering Technologist 3-Mechanical Design

Coastal International Security, Inc•Los Alamos, NM
•$62 - $67•Onsite

About The Position

The W93 Systems Development and Realization group is seeking an experienced mechanical designer to check design definitions. The role requires expertise in 3D CAD, hardware design and fabrication, GD&T, and engineering concepts. The checker reviews completed work to expert standards, works independently on complex and unique technical problems, and may guide multidisciplinary teams through design iterations to address potential engineering defects. The position may also mentor junior staff in Models Based Definition (MBD) and GD&T. The Q-20 W93/Mk7 Systems Development and Realization Group defines, develops, and fields the warhead system for a new Navy submarine-launched ballistic missile program. It supports DoD/Navy SSP and DOE/NNSA customers and works with Sandia National Laboratories, Lockheed Martin Space, and production agency teams in the design, qualification, and realization processes. The program is in its early design stages, and the role will support frequent updates to product and design definitions amid quick deadlines and changing priorities. The position is based at TA-3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico, and is 100% onsite. The stated compensation is $62–$67 per hour. The schedule is 5/8 with flexibility; most of the team works a 9/80 schedule, and some work 4/10s. The assignment is for two years, with a possible extension and conversion described as unlikely. Per diem and relocation are available. U.S. citizenship is required, as is a DOE Q clearance or the ability to obtain one; an active Q clearance is strongly preferred. The start is ASAP.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Science, Math, or a related field from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of directly related education and experience.
  • Advanced understanding of mechanical CAD and experience in mechanical computer-aided design, manufacturing, inspection, assembly, and testing.
  • Experience checking CAD models and drawings for form, fit, function, and MBD; Creo is preferred.
  • Experience with CAD software, PDMLink Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), GD&T, and tolerance stack-up analysis software. Candidates with other CAD platforms may be considered if they can demonstrate transition to Creo.
  • Mechanical design experience ensuring product definitions meet requirements and producibility goals while reducing rejected products.
  • Familiarity with ASME Y14 standards, especially Y14.5 (2009) and Y14.41 MBD.
  • Experience developing and interpreting 3D CAD model standards, practices, and procedures for communicating design intent internally and to other National Security Enterprise organizations.
  • Knowledge of hardware fabrication, inspection, and assembly processes.
  • Experience with weapon system configuration management workflows.
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks for a variety of customers and ensure product definitions meet requirements and design intent.
  • Experience leading reviews for design, manufacture, assembly, and testing.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and a record of constructive, cooperative working relationships.
  • Independent time management, attention to detail, prioritization skills, and comfort working in a fast-paced environment.
  • U.S. citizenship and a DOE Q clearance or ability to obtain one; an active Q clearance is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to work 100% onsite at TA-3.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in drafting and design work in both weapons and non-weapons arenas.
  • Experience developing and implementing organizational design and drafting standards.
  • Previous model and drawing checking experience in the Nuclear Security Enterprise.
  • DOE or NNSA experience.
  • Active Q clearance.
  • Creo experience, preferably with Creo 12.

Responsibilities

  • Check design definitions by reviewing models and drawings for form, fit, function, and Models Based Definition (MBD).
  • Conduct tolerance and stack analyses and verify compliance with the latest design standards.
  • Review product definitions for producibility, requirements compliance, and reduced product rejection.
  • Guide staff from diverse backgrounds through design iterations to address potential engineering defects.
  • Lead reviews for design, manufacturing, assembly, and testing.
  • Recommend MBD best practices and improvements while maintaining compliance with NNSA, LANL, and industry standards.
  • Support weapon system configuration management workflows for authorization, review, release, and distribution of models, drawings, specifications, and related product definitions.
  • Mentor junior staff on MBD and GD&T.
  • Work on multiple tasks for a variety of customers, supporting engineers, physicists, scientists, technologists, and technicians.
