About The Position

The Emerging Store Manager (ESM) is a developmental leadership role intended to prepare associates for potential Store Manager opportunities in Walmart U.S. store operations. The assignment provides training and development across retail operations, people leadership, merchandising, financial management, customer experience, and community engagement. It is expected to last no longer than 12 to 18 months, with progression into a Store Manager position expected within that period but not guaranteed. If a Store Manager role is not secured, next steps will depend on performance and business needs and may include placement in another role at a different level. Associates must maintain mobility within their assigned region for Store Manager applications and potential placement, and complete evaluations against developmental milestones and competency assessments. The role involves learning to manage store financial performance and budgets; support sales through effective merchandise presentation, pricing, signing, in-stock levels, and inventory; guide associates and managers in resolving customer concerns; and support staffing plans, talent pipelines, and succession planning. The ESM also supports community outreach, associate engagement, store management objectives, policy compliance, asset protection, safety, quality assurance, and execution of business plans and projects. The position works with stakeholders across the organization, including Market Managers, Regional leadership, Merchandising, Human Resources, and Asset Protection. The role includes supervising and developing associates through selection, training, mentoring, assigning duties, setting expectations, evaluating performance, recognition, coaching, and fostering a team-based workplace. The ESM is expected to model Walmart’s values and standards of ethics and integrity, support the Open Door Policy, serve customers and members, drive continuous improvement, and promote a workplace where associates can belong and thrive. The annual salary range is $85,000 to $120,000. Additional compensation may include annual or quarterly performance bonuses, and some positions may include regional pay-zone or complex-structure compensation. Walmart offers benefits including medical, vision, and dental coverage; 401(k); stock purchase; company-paid life insurance; paid time off and leave programs; disability coverage; company discounts; Military Leave Pay; adoption and surrogacy expense reimbursement; and the Live Better U education benefit program. Benefit eligibility and terms may vary.
