About The Position

The Emerging Store Manager (ESM) is a developmental leadership assignment designed to prepare associates for potential Store Manager opportunities within Walmart U.S. store operations. The role develops experience across retail operations, people leadership, merchandising, financial management, customer experience, and community engagement. The assignment has no guaranteed timeframe, but is expected to last no longer than 12 to 18 months, with the expectation of progressing into a Store Manager position. Associates must be willing to maintain mobility within their assigned region for Store Manager applications and potential placement. If a Store Manager role is not secured within that timeframe, next steps will be based on performance and business need and may include placement in a role at a different level. The ESM learns to manage financial performance, monitor sales and profit goals, assess business reports and profit-and-loss statements, and support effective merchandising, pricing, signing, in-stock levels, and inventory. The role helps ensure customer issues are resolved, staffing plans and talent pipelines meet business needs, and store objectives are communicated and delivered. It also involves community outreach, associate engagement through the Open Door Policy, compliance with company policies, asset protection and safety controls, quality assurance, and continuous improvement. The position supports and develops associates and managers through training, mentoring, assigning duties, setting performance expectations, evaluations, coaching, recognition, and succession planning. The ESM works with stakeholders across the organization, including Market Managers, Regional leadership, Merchandising, Human Resources, and Asset Protection, to execute business plans and organizational objectives. Successful completion of the assignment includes evaluation against developmental milestones and competency assessments.
